Very thought proviking and he's on the money, about us not making things anymore. Read an article recently about many of our American flags are being made in China.....now that's some patriotism for you!

Then - leave school early and get a trade
Now - stay in school (cause only dummies leave) and get a university degree and work in an office

Then - make do with what you have, work, save,  buy
Now - fack the Then, I'll have it now thanks and I don't want to work or save I'll just Owe. I'm gonna be (am) a big shot don't you know? A star. Make squillions.

Then - anything from overseas (China) was crap and no-one would buy it even though it was cheap
Now - US companies cannot compete because Labor is killing them. Same good, Same Quality, but cheaper from China cause they earn MUCH less in comparative dollars so the Labor Component of the finished product is cheaper and thus the product is cheaper.

Yes. Certain skills Might appear to be dying out in our part of the world - but - a ride down and around any industrial estate taking not of the plethora of machine/engineering shops makes me think otherwise.

And strangely, as odd as it might seem, the more Mass Produced things get from countries that have far lower labors costs, the more people turn to the little guy and give them their business. In some/many things.

Cheap goods for the masses. More pricey goods for those who enjoy some cheap mass-type goods while understanding the benefit of less mass produced stuff and buying accordingly.

Good video, I definitely try to do anything I can myself. I would rather try to fix something and break it 5 times in the process, rather than just having someone else to do it. I love learning new things like that.

Still though, as far as vehicles any everything else, I bought a Buell and it was cool to have an american bike, but I'm happy to just have something japanese again. I'd be so much more willing to buy american vehicles if they'd learn how to use the metric system, haha. I have a serious issue with trusting someone's design and manufacturing ability if they can't even accept something so useful and logical and the metric system. That's like taking cooking advice from someone who's stirring his dinner with a screwdriver. My Toyota truck is the best of both worlds, it's a japanese company so you know it was designed well, but it was made in America(unlike half of the 'American' trucks people tell you that you should've bought) and it was made out of more domestic parts than most of those 'American' Chevy's and GM trucks too.

Google "Your world is about to get a whole lot smaller", or "World made by hand"

It's great until the frame rusts out     Even then, Toyota buys them back at 1.5 times blue book if you are lucky enough to have a '97-00 model   :D

Nope the point of the video was doing and learning to do stuff yourself. Majority of GSers do that to some degree even if it is simple maintenance. He was pointing out the fact that the younger generation lacks the skills or interest to do simple tasks that require some labour.

I live in Pittsburgh, absolutely no vehicle has a chance of lasting through these winters, haha. It's 6 years old and the bottom is still decently clean though. I think when spring/summer comes I'm gonna buy some paint from POR15 and just layer the bottom in it just for peace of mine.

It's true about a lot of people having less ambition to learn how to do things. Maybe it comes from me growing up poor? I hate paying people to do things for me though. I'll hire an electrician or someone to deal with gas fixtures in my house for safety reasons, but other than that I just tear into things when there's a problem. Doesn't even matter if you break something, because it's still cheaper to have something break, try to fix it, destroy it in the process, learn a few things, buy a few new parts and finally get it all back together than it would be to pay someone to do it the first time.

I'm in awe every time I see that video. Thanks for posting that Twisted.

I can't post the proper link from my phone, but can somebody get on YouTube and search for "Mike Rowe speech to Congress" and post the link here? They go hand in hand with the first video IMO.

That's the one Paul! Thank you. If I try to post a YouTube link, it tries to post the "mobile" link.
