hey, ive been using the search function and still can seem to find the answer.
the question: Has anyone hollowed out the stock muffler? is it beneficial? steps involved?
i would like to keep the look of the stock muffler. i think it looks nice. i plan to re-jet and have a drop in k&n filter to go in the airbox. i just want to open the pipe up for a throatier sound. i do have a welder so if need be i will use it.
If no one has done this yet (doubt it) ill document and post.

My buddy drilled out his 02 E and didn't like it (he ended up putting a Jardine in) but that aside, we both thought it sounded weird when he drilled it. But perhaps others can chime in who know more, I've literally only heard my buddys and neither of us care for the sound and he actually regretted doing it.
I just found this youtube vid too;

The PO modified the exhaust in my 98, from the looks of it, he took an acetylene torch to the interior of the muffler, through the exhaust outlet, and melted down the outlet pipe on the inside, therefore de-baffling ish the muffler. It didnt sound too bad, although, i had no experience with the bike otherwise.
Now, I have an akro slip on. It sounds much better, and cost 30 bucks and some fiddle time with the muffler man to get it installed.
remove the first catalyc convertor you will find it improves performance and sounds real good see my topic below .http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=58446.0

Just be careful if you have emissions regulations where you live.

In most states, removing the cat is illegal.

The new Gs's have cat!? whoa! I had no idea. seriously.
I read not that long ago that the just the ones shipped to California got the Cats. Go figure.
the gs500 of 2007 have 2 cats .The second cat is in the front of the muffler it is approximatly 4inches in diameter and about 1 1/2 inches deep .the first cat fills up with carbon and kills your performance.thats what the ones that came to NEWZEALAND have .
Why would you require 2 cats on a moter that runs on fumes?

You can hollow them out and be okay. Normally...people don't seem to care about motorcycles. I now here in GA you don't even have to get them inspected. Cars...are a different story. In Alabama, you don't have emissions...period. None of that crap.
Is it possible to reverse the process without a welder in the house? I have a stock pipe with the baffles drilled, and may need it a bit quieter for say a few hours while it goes over the pits.

You could try stuffing it with exhaust packing or something similar. My Ducati is LOUD and passed. If they bring it up point out it is the stock exhaust.
Hi ghostrider look in my first post above look at 6th and 7th photo this is looking back towards the muffler from just behind the first cat ,there is a slight bend and if you blow the pic up a bit you can just see the cat it is at the very start of the muffler,it was very difficult to photo as i had to hold a torch in one hand (the green thing)and camera in the other.You can see the rubber mount pointing upwards if you want to get a good orientation also part of chrome cover in the seventh photo . A cat this size would serve a100 HP engine.
