Title: Appraise my Bike!
Post by: Kijona on January 20, 2012, 02:01:54 PM
Okay...I'm not ACTUALLY selling my GS500, I just want to know what it would be worth if I did. In other words, what would YOU offer me. :)

Specs:

1997(frame)1998(title) second owner with 12k miles and counting. Completely functioning, little to no rust. Slight scrape on the fairing (about the size of a small bandaid). Original chain, new but OLD tires. No cracks in the tires - they look brand new, actually. The windshield has a few stress cracks at the mounting points. Nothing immediately obvious. Needs nothing, literally. Carbs recently professionally cleaned and adjusted. Valves will have been recently adjusted too.

Rare orange color, and even rarer orange, non-faded Suzuki fairing.

Oh, and the emblem is a little boogered up. I'd replace the cover and emblem before I did try to sell it.

Truth be told I haven't decided whether I like the bike or not. In some ways I love it - in others I kind of hate it. I love my 07 GS500F...so if I did sell this, I'd be getting something like an SV650F(S). Ideas?

This is a bad game to play, all that matters is that you like your bike.  Even a pristine GS isn't worth much (look at what low mile new ones sell for) so you would probably be disappointed with what someone would realistically offer you.

With patience and that dinged up side cover and emblem replaced.
I think u can get close to book value.
which is $1,385 from my zip (if location even matters on kbb)

personally, if it looks and rides as good as it looks in the photos.... I wouldnt hesitate to give $1200 cash if I had it and needed a bike.
Mostly due to seeing ones in FARRRRRRRRRRRRR worse condition locally here and ppl hell bent on Not budging from $1000 to $1200 they ask for.

(edit)
but thats just because if I got the $, I actually like to try and give a person what its worth and not try to haggle down and insult the person.
but thats just me.

I sorta agree with tombstone, if you have the money, sure you can try to bring the person down. but sometimes they need it, unless you got a lying scumbag PO like mine, that's a different story. Now if its something like around here, $2,000 for a wrecked GS500f. Like forks so bent up looks like the person who was driving it died on it.. kinda wreck. than yeah. haggling is surely needed..

depends on where you sell it and what time of year you sell it

you'd get more cash in the spring. common sense :)

i think it's worth quite a bit though seeing as how clean it is

Usually when I'm selling something on say kijiji, Craigslist locally...I look at what others selling what I'm selling are going for and then price accordingly (depending on how motivated I am to sell).  *usually* modifications don't get you more regardless of what you've done and moreso what you've paid...modificatioins are a labour of love and while they may speed or get buyers more interested in your sale you won't get it back dollar for dollar, thats just the way she goes.  GS's are a tough one I find since they are so damn popular and plentiful.  My buddy is looking for one at the moment and on any given day we can jump on Kijiji, auto trader etc for our general area and there are tonnes of them.   Literally tonnes.

But since they don't make em anymore, hang onto it if youre not cash strapped ... one day it'll be a collectors item ;)

My '98 "Orange Crush," with it's Targa cowling and chin spoiler, brought me $1,600 in November 2009.
Was the economy better than or worse?
She had a dent in the tank, scratches on the muffler and both side cases in the usual underside spot. and 18,000miles.

And Cargo Converti saddlebags that I wish I HAD NOT included in the sale because I want them for my current GS and can't find them anywhere.

Nope, I actually sold the KLR to buy this. I sold the KLR650 (was a 1988 model with quite a bit of wear) for 1500, but I only paid 800 for it. This bike I paid $1200 for because it wouldn't run.

Wow, you sold that for $1600? No offense, of course, it just seems high! I noticed yours looks like it's a bit faded (though it could be the camera) and was/is missing the mudflap on the front fender.

I don't really WANT to sell it, I just haven't decided if I like it or love it yet, you know? I know I love my 07 F model...I guess I just need to put some more miles on the Orange Crush bike before deciding.

I've never had the pleasure of riding something as naked as the GS...though I suppose the KLR was more or less naked though the tank really provided some wind protection.

I bet I could sell or trade to Adidas. Maybe if I threaten to part the bike out he'll come buy it off me.  :D :icon_lol: :icon_lol: :icon_lol:

In all seriousness, I'm just seeing what people think. I bet after I ride it some more it'll grow on me.

Thanks! $1,600 was my asking price. I was prepared to go down to $1,400. The guy from Allentown never tried to haggle.
He said: "So you want $1,600?"
Me: "That's right."
Guy: "Okay."
He shows up the next week with a trailer and an envelope full of 100 bills. I mark the bike as sold on here and on Craigslist and find an email from a forum member from Jersey begging me to sell it to her. It was quite an ego-stroke and I started wondering if I should have set at asking price at $2000!

You're right, the paint was faded, mud guard was missing, and it needed a new rear tire too. The pipe was a Cobra F1's that sounded like Pop Rocks and five spoiled children in Wall Mart.

Beauty goes a long way

16-1700 in spring. Seriously that is a good looking and very functional bike. Putting in gstwin references and giving the buyer the info and the instructions to sign in to gstwin and incessantly talk about the bike is a huge selling point. I usually hand em a printout with gstwin as a header sorta, cos when buying a bike to many things are happenign people will forget ...
Anyway yea 1700 easy.
Cool.

Thanks guys! :)

Well, if I do decide to sell it, I'll list it on here first.

Adidas - LOL! You better pay me for the bike PLUS $.50 per mile.  :icon_lol: :icon_mrgreen: :icon_lol:
