Turning left on to my street at night and hit a little patch of gravel. The bike went sideways and I steered with it. It grabbed and pitched me off of my seat bit but I managed to stay on top and get straightened out.
Lesson learned and no damage. It left a funny dust pattern on my tire all the way to the edge of the tread. :icon_eek:

Ah, so you have now experienced the Debriz Zone that ALL intersections have. Only the size of the zone and the amount of debris varies.

Well that sucks.
On my first bike, I hit a dirt clod from dump trucks driving up and down a back road and went horizontal but right when I thought I was going down, suddenly tire caught and I was straight up and down again. Really weird but I was just too happy I didn't eat it.
Nothing like the feeling of having your body half way on the handle bars and no control. Well all is well that ends well.
What state do you live in? I went out for my first ride in months yesterday. It was about 35-38 degrees(Pennsylvania) so I figured why not. Between the cold pavement and layer of salt dust, the thought of getting any kind of traction was a joke. I actually thought my clutch was slipping(maybe it was, who knows) but I think it was just my rear tire spinning up at nothing more than a handful of throttle. If I tried to give it gas when I was making a sharp turn my back end would slide right out. Pretty nuts! Either way, I'll take what I can get, I was just happy to be out on the road. I was impressed I made it home without taking a tumble, I was actually counting on one.
Yeah I am in TX. Roads were warm and dry. :)
I stayed up that night researching pants (I was wearing jeans) and then bought some Firstgear HT Air Overpants. I was going to use that cash to make an extra payment on the car but I do not think that I will regret my decision.

Here's where I slid out on my DL1000 - right before I traded it for a GS500 (best decision I ever made, by the way). At the time (before the pic was taken) the road was soaking wet and that oil/coolant/whatever slick was completely invisible. It was also early in the morning and I was just starting off on a 150 mile trip. That 15-foot slide ruined my whole day and the next week. I cracked a couple ribs, pulled a muscle in my chest, got road rash THROUGH my leather motorcycle jacket, and a few other miscellaneous scrapes and bruises.
Just goes to show you that it's all about how you land and where you end up. :)

Its pretty neat how the bike really wants to stay upright... its like its made for it or something, all you have to do is guide it in the right direction!

I hope the next time all hell is breaking loose I'll remember to contemplate angular momentum as the ground is rising up to meet me.

Yeh did it wear all the way through or did you just get burn from the friction of the road?
Sometimes you can get Rash caused by the jacket/pants themselves. As the material is forced Hard onto the skin and then, while still with applied pressure, moves. It WILL take some skin off. But nothing compared to what it could have been without the jacket/pants.

It didn't tear through. It scraped me through the jacket, similar to what Mister said. The jacket held up pretty good but my arm didn't. When I removed my jacket I had a "burn" all down my left arm which was beginning to bleed. And yeah, I'm pretty sure it's a motorcycle jacket. I wouldn't be dumb enough to ride without the proper gear. I wear mesh in the summer and leather in the winter.

well yeah they sure CLAIM to make motorcycle gear. but apparently they're not very good at it :-/
Is it that you had leather, but no internal armor in it? I might guess that having armored bits, guards better against internal rash.
That, and I guess they allowed the outside leather bits to be too grippy. particularly looking at the pictures. Note: "soft & flexible" = "grippy and bad", in my unlearned opinion.
