Title: Carburetors Needle valve seat O-Ring? Which Size?
Post by: piresito on January 23, 2012, 10:15:36 AM
Hello,
I've just cleaned my carbs, and found out that the needle valve seat doesn't want to stay in its place. Its O-ring is squared, so I need a new one. If I go to Suzuki I will have to wait several days and I don't know if they sell that Oring or I will have to buy the whole seat.
Does anyone know which size is that Oring, so I can buy it from a general hardware store?

Regards,

Regards,

What year bike is it? If it's an older model with the older carbs, you're in luck: http://www.ronayers.com/Search/N/687/PartNumber/13374-35C00/Source/SU

BikeBandit also lists the part if you search for: "13374-35C00" which is the part number.

If it's a newer bike, sorry, can't help. The o-ring isn't sold separately and from the fiche, it doesn't even look like there is one. So, who knows?

Edit: Also, I should mention that most of the o-rings in the carbs are of obscure sizes and cannot be had from your regular hardware store. Additionally, I should point out that there is a difference between rubber and nitrile o-rings. Most of the ones you'll find at hardware stores are going to be standard rubber which will degrade when exposed to gas. There are chemical resistant rubber o-rings however, your best bet is to find ones that are made of nitrile. I know that NAPA has a selection of nitrile o-rings. That's it, though.

That O ring is not that hard to find - autoparts store can match it.
Whatever you do do not buy a O ring from a hardware store, those are meant to stand to water, and will get eaten by fuel. You want buna or neoprene ...
Cool.

Thank you both for warning me about that nitrile stuff...it really made me think why the hell we cant use gasoline to wash Oring chains but there was Orings in the carbs, now I know the truth!! Nice!

Going to the autoparts store first thing tomorow!

Nitrile is the one that is gas tolerant. Standard rubber is not gas resistant - just so that's clear.

bike maintenance= couple o beers, music on, bike on center stand, spin the wheel and wipe the gas soaked chain, spin some more "man this is looking like a good day to ride!" then.... fire up a pre ride smoke BLAMMO

Have you ever felt a urge to have the teeth of the bike shop mechanic spread all over the place?!!  :2guns:  :icon_twisted:
What did you do to solve it?

BTW, I just bought the O-rings. The woman in the store told me that they can hold gasoline, but I doubt that she knew what she was talking about. Is there a faster test than getting them in the carbs and wait to see if they hold?

EDIT: Broken english correction...

Well drop em in a cup of gas. Rubber will swell in a few mins. If it says BUNA or Neoprene etc its will be fine, you bought @ auto parts store ? then its prolly the gas resistant kind.
Cool.

What the hell happened? Is that...remnants of an o-ring that melted into the float bowl????

By the way, apparently Nitrile and BUNA are about the same thing? Confusing.

Neoprene and BUNA are close enough.

I have a few weird ones in my collection but a rubber O ring essentially is for water devices. There is a few that they recomend for use as belts etc ... think they are also synthetic ... anything synthetic is a good one for fuel its likely to be neoprene based.

I went to the autoparts which didn't have it, and they sent me to a "Oring specialized" store which had various of Orings, greases, lubes, plumbing tubes, etc... I will put it in a cup of gas to test it, never though that gasoline could eat rubber so fast!
Thanks.

Kijona, that was actualy a broken stock gasket, which the guy re assembled and left it leaking gas, then I took the bike back and he just placed that silicon universal compound around the broken gasket and closed the bowl. It fixed the leak but why the f**k is one spark plug black and other beige?!! Grrrrr...

Rubber swells pretty quick, and O ring store, man my nightmares about the "shiny pants store" is comming true.

OK here is a bit of history - My friend tends to wear these sorta athletic outfits that are made of a shiny and noisy material. My wife and I were talking about where he finds these, cos we never see em at the regular store's like Walmart etc.
So one day we ask him, and he said @ the store, I got mad and said, yea at the store I know, what store, the shiny pants store ?
O rings have their own store now ...  :icon_sad:

Sorry, my english knowledge isn't good enough to understand that story...

Anyway, today I found that I needed the Oring for the floats, as one float kept falling off the carbs while I handled them. So I went to the O'ring store again, with the float in my hand, and now there was a guy there, he told me right away: "You want a oring for your fuel float! How many?!"
As it appears, the guy knew about this stuff and assured me that the Orings are good for fuel applications. Found out that the store speciality is parts for industrial machines!
Weird pricing though, yesterday I bought 4 Orings for 0.65$ (0.50€) and today I paid 4.5$ (3.5€) for 4 smaller Orings...  :cookoo:

You think you can ship me a container load - like a 1000 of those 2, I have had the most trouble with those 2 ...
The other 2 O rings I have found locally quite well.
Cool.

Yep, no problem... I suggest that I send you first a sample (2?4? of each?) for you to test them. If they are ok for you, then I will order a truck load of them and ship it to you.

I'm saying this because they had to measure my dryed-anemic Oring in order to select them, as the oring has shrinked for 15 years the measurement is not 100% accurate and they might not be 100% the same as the Suzuki. It happened today that the Oring for the floats were too fat, then the float wouldn't fit in the carb socket, in diameter was nice but too thick, going to the store first thing in the morning again getting one with less 0.1 or 0.2mm, this time the carbs are coming with me to the store...  O0

Send me your address so I can send the sample to you.

Just went there. The float Oring that I had yesterday, was 1.5mm thick. Today he gave me a 1.2mm (and same diameter) in the shop, and its fits ok in the carbs. It would be excellent if it was a 1.3mm but the didn't have any value in between, so I got the 1.2mm and I'm assembling the carbs with this one!

Btw, I could see in the package that the material is NBR 70!

I found the best way to fit the floats was using two of those Orings. With one of them, it fit ok but not very snug. So I've tried inserting a 2nd oring in the same slot, at first it looked like it would be half out from the slot but I after some pressure in it, sitted just perfectly. This way I know for sure that those floats won't be falling from there soon!

I've noticed tons of variance in that part on our bikes ...
That 2 ring solutuion ... works for yours, may not work on another ... luckily modern synthetic rubber/neoprene can be stretched and abused like crazy ...
Cool.
