Title: GS500 custom exhaust
Post by: shonole on January 24, 2012, 10:59:12 PM
I tried a search, but couldn't find anything similar.  Has anyone ever tried to run their custom exhaust as such?

Ducati Monster 696

Previous owner installed this "tuner pipe" for a car on my 07. It's carbon fibre...that's about it, It's basically a straight-through with a restrictor/baffle that you can take out. It's obnoxiously loud without it so I left it in and sealed it with some high-temp red RTV. Sounds DAMN good though, in my opinion. The pipe and muffler were two different sizes so he filled in the gaps with welds. Somewhat shotty but you'd never know it wasn't stock OR a car pipe. LOL!

I need to make a video of me riding it so you can hear the sound! :)

That actually looks pretty sweet!  I'd love to hear it!  Get on that video!

I'm pretty sold on the idea of dual underfairing exhaust like that Ducati has.  Done right, I think it would be sexy.  I'm just not sure about clearance around the rear shock (since on the Ducati it's run inside the frame.

You can see it well here:

Well first things first, get the bike RUNNING! LOL

But yeah. I mean...it's not exactly a sportsbike and I think undercarriage exhaust is a lot sexier but hey, that's just my honest opinion. You might be able to swing it. The only thing I would be concerned about is the integrity of the plastics. You'd need shielded pipes and shielded pipes are heavy. I have a set of TL1000 exhausts that are shielded which weigh about 15lbs each.

Ouch.  That's hefty.  But..I'm willing to make the sacrifice!

And I'm hoping to have that handled this weekend! *crosses fingers*  These wouldn't be an immediate thing.  Just picturing the way I want her to look in the end.  Nothing crazy, just some nice, subtle tweaks to make her my own.

If you want sexy - buy the Ducati.

If only I could.  One day, I will most certainly have one.  One of my top 5 bikes.  But, for now, I'm happy to have my GS.

They are a perfect step up from the GS. Try and stick with the 2 valve Monsters though. 4 valve will cost you a fortune to maintain.

Been there done it. It looks horrendous on a GS since you would have to wrap the exhaust pipe around the swingarm, no room to go through, and then under or through the seat. On a 600 or litre bike it looks nice because the rearend is longer and larger. On a GS it looks out of place. Try searching for undertail exhaust. There was another member that had this setup also. I don't have my pics of it anymore since it was just butt ugly. If you look at my bike my dual mufflers use to exit out of the dual tail lights on my tail. I've relocated under the bike now like a Buell a love it.

Bottom of the page, is probably what you were talking about. I'm not a fan either, also I'm not sure how the suspension on that would work. Either way, to each their own.

I agree with seamax.  Anything outside the swingarm, then up to the tail is fugly.

I'm fine with the stock exhaust.. but since I busted my fairings, some of the "custom" fairings on there look pretty good:

Wonder how to get some of *that * action...

The first pic is Dgyvers - he used to make the CF fairing. Heck he even made that building it is pictured in, I have seen it at several stages ...
The second ... no idea.
The ducati 916/996 under tail exhaust looks good, the monster undertail exhaust I am sorry looks retarded ... just IMHO.

The cbr600/1000rr looks OK but I wont be breaking down my GS'es tail for that ... the only tail worth molesting a GS tail section for IMHO is the 916 style exhaust.
Cool.
Buddha.

I figured as much.  Guess I'll eventually be going the same route.

I didn't want to start a new thread, but I've got a question for those who are familiar with exhausts. I picked up a Muzzy that was used in a 4 cylinder application. It's longer than my V&H SS pipe, and appears to be a larger diameter. Would it be ill-advised to put it on and not expect performance issues, or will I need to fabricate a new baffle to increase the back-pressure?

I think with any performance mods you would just have to rejet correctly to accomodate it. I think someone used a car muffler on here once.  :D

I keep finding myself drawn back to dual undercarriage exhaust.

Maybe something like this?

Can I offer you some advice here. Why take all the time and money to do this to your GS if you are thinking of upgrading? I mean you may not be going to do it soon but in the future you talking of it. You won't get any of the money back when you sell it. I know the mod bug is hard to tame sometimes. The handlebar mod and mirrors are a good choice as they can be taken off and put on your next bike. Save your pennies for that Ducati you want.  :thumb:

What the hell is the purpose of that long loop on the kick stand? Looks like a whisk handle!  :bs:

Also, the way that license tag is attached is absurd. Why would you put the plate that close to the chain?

I swear, some people don't know how to tastefully mod their bikes....

I would say it would make it easier to put the kick stand up/down. And as for the plate I would say it would be easier to mount on that side as you have the brake on the other.

Force of habit more than anything else.  Every vehicle I've ever owned I've modded.  And I probably won't be doing and exhaust mods unless I stumble across some cheap pipes.  Plus, even when I upgrade, I will be holding onto the GS, because, it's like you said, I'd never get my money back out of it (although, for the steal I got it at, I probably could..).  That, and the GS is basically perfect for short commutes into town and light riding.  That said, I'll definitely be saving the big bucks up for my next bike!
