Title: GS500f gas tank.
Post by: J_Walker on January 26, 2012, 12:39:15 AM
I was curious about the gastank on the gs5, I read someone call the tank "Small" is this true? Never really ridden other motorcycles so I really don't know, but it looks rather large to me.. Also, is there retro fits of other gas tanks from other bikes that fit onto the GS500f? Just curious nothing I wanna attempt.

5.4 gallons is not exactly "small". Especially on a bike that can easily achieve 45-50mpg. Reserve is 1 gallon.

Thats what I thought. Lol. But I agree, my bike has yet to achieve 45-50mpg, but Its broken, and needs some lovin. so it will soon run smooth like all the rest of our little GS500s

I'm not sure of the year (maybe 2001?) but the Gs got a larger tank. I can't even tell you the difference in capacity.......

Little over 4 gal 1989-2000. Little over 5.1 gal 2001+
I forget the exact numbers and am lazy right now to look it up but it is in the WIKI and the service manuals and owners manuals.

Original tank was 17 liters and it changed to 20 liters in 2001 when the carbs went from 2 jet to 3 jet.

20 liters is not a small tank. In fact, of the bikes out there it is one of the largest. Vstrom is larger, so is XJR1300 and so on. But of the smaller capacity bikes designed for street riding, the GS500 tank is the largest on the market.
