OK first off I am going to introduce myself. I currently do not own a Motorcycle but have always wanted one and after doing research it would seem the GS500F fits perfectly and is an excellent first timer. I like the sport bike look but with a more up right ride. I am more into cars really but I would like a bike to ride on the nice days to save some gas and have fun as the roads are a to blast drive (especially in an AE86 so I can only imagine the joy it will be on 2 wheels).
Anyway I have come across a 2004 GS500F that I really can not say no too. It has 3500 miles and is good condition; except the motor is locked up. I really do not what happened to it for it to lock up though except that the crank does turn over but the piston does not want to go down. I have motor knowledge and it sounds like a bent rod. I am wondering if this is an issue with these bikes?
The cost of the bike will run me less then $200 as I am trading the owner a refurbished turbo for it so I figured at the very worst I could part it and get the money back. However I really do not want to do this. Still the only parts availible for it are OEM and to do a motor rebuild will run north of $500 which still puts me on a decent bike for $700 which is good. That is if the crank is usable.
Also are there any other motors that will swap with relative ease on this bike? Will the older GS500 motors work? Any suggestions?

OH and I am machinist by trade and rebuild, modify, and sell turbos. I thought about turbo'n a bike but really I think it would be difficult to do properly and to be cost effective I would be better off just buying a larger CC bike.
Others may croon at this, but buying an engine that isn't locked up may be easier and cheaper. Then you can spend your time and money upgrading performance and looks. If the title on the frame turns out good then you are limited only by your imagination, as i'm sure this forum will example well.
As far as turboing, its not the fab up thats hard, but configuring a fuel delivery system that can handle the new power. At least thats what the internet seems to say. (I figure one should go for any other turboed bike out there) If its a project you're looking for, this is a great platform for that.
I say do it. Its only money, and can be re-acquired!
before you spend money turboing out your GS500.. Maybe it should run first.... Trust me, the smallest things on these bikes give the biggest problems, I WOULD KNOW! :0

1000x this. I'm so glad I found a used engine and made a frankenstein motor that works. I like having extra parts whenever I needed something, being able to take it apart without worrying about putting it back together, and you can sell the spares or give them to forum members.

The turbo idea was mostly due to having a turbo that would work fairly decent for a Motorcycle but I don't believe it would be cost efficient at all. Honestly I am not after a high hp Bike. I am more interested in fixing it to stock like condition. I know first hand that modifications typically take from the value of a vehicle.
I posted and inquired about the motor. I would like to find a running example and then keep what I already have for parts.
So no simple swaps? What are some other problem areas these bikes have?
Suzuki added an oil cooler in 2004 on the 'F' model, and their are some changes to the carburators from the previous bikes. Sounds like the previous owner ran it low on oil ~ something to watch for on the GS500. For $200 I would look for an 04+ motor and swap it out in its entirety.
