I am in a pickle with my bike (this is like my 4th posting yippie). The rod bearing seized and spun completely donkey raping the crank. The rest of the motor is in excellent condition except the crank and a rod. I took the time and looked up the cost of crank. $600; OUCH. Then I browsed eBay and came across an older model crank. Little searching online and this Bike has been built; well since forever.
Anyway there is a crank and rods on eBay for less then $100 plus shipping and it is from a 92. I check the part number for the 04 and it is:
12220-01D02
Check the part number for the 91:
12220-01D02 (superceded 12220-01D00)
So basically what it saying is that the newer crank works in the older motor and it is its current replacement. I know that using an older crank is not ideal but cost effective very much so especially when you get the other parts you need.
I actually took the chance and bought the older crank. I don't know if anyone else has done this but I figured what the hell. At that cost I could probably resell it if it does not work. I would also at least get the rods that need as well.
Another thing is that I can not find an oversized rod bearing for the 04+. They do have .25mm and .5mm for the older bikes which also share the current rod bearings number. Does anyone know if these will work for the newer motors?
I was lloking for some oversized pistons thinking since I have it apart why not increase displacement as much as possible. I took a peek on eBay and I found 4 new in the box 75mm GS500 pistons. Would anyone know where to find rings as this is piston is listed for the older model but not the newer? I am in hopes they will work for the 04+.
Bonus question: Where can someone get a decent deal on a gasket kit? Thanks in advance.
There was a GS550 and GS500 in the early 80's. They were 4 cylinder bikes. Not at all compatible with our 2 cylinder GS500 first made in 1989.
As I understand it, the basic mechanicals of the engine and internals are the same from 1989 to the present. A few minor improvements buy compatible.
A set of 4 cylinders makes me think it is for the older GS and not for out GS twins. If it is the ebay item I saw, it states for 1984 model.
Yeah I saw the ones you are talking about as well. However this was a new listing on the pistons and like a VCR player that was left in the trash I snatched it like a crack addict.
I have the parts number and they are listed as 75mm pistons which are too big for the 4 cylinder bike.
It is:
12111-01D01-100
Also they are listed as 89-95.
Here is the listing:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/150604186105?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
and the listing you are referring too:

I saw that one, too.
It is just for one. Don't think it is for a set of 4.
The code at the bottom of their listings seems to be their inventory number and what box they have the part stored in.
I will be fighting mad if it is. I emailed them and asked to verify as it seemed a bit odd. They replied that it was for a set of 4 of pistons. I guess I will see when it arrives.
If they are in fact a full set will they work?
If they are a full set it would make a full 500cc, a gain of 13cc lol. That is not enough to make a weed eater.
I don't know why it would be a set of 4 when the bike only has 2 cylinders.
They show only 1 piston in the listing.
I guess wait and see when you get it/them.
