Title: Rebuild kits? Good place to buy parts?
Post by: miander on February 06, 2012, 10:00:43 PM
Once the replacement crank gets here and I am assured it will work I will be ready to purchase the remaining parts to assemble the motor. It would seem that I need a set of bearings, rings, and a gasket a set. Does anyone sell a rebuild kit that would include these parts? If not where is the best place to buy these from? Is there a forum vendor that I could support when purchasing these?

Also what are some other good ideas while I have everything apart? Any specific maintenance other then what I have listed?

+1 to where to find gasket sets and extra spacers/o-rings.

For an 05 of course as there is lots for 98-00 as I have found not many for 01+

Not thread jacking just didn't wanna make a same post as you just posted!

There are 2 gasket sets on ebay. I have one of each. Both look good and quite complete.

One actually says 89-07 on the package.
The engine is the same for all years so all engine gaskets would be the same.
The hard part is identifying where each gasket or o-ring goes because they are not labeled. Keep track of things as you take them off and match them to the new parts as you reassemble the motor.

Athena Gasket sets look pretty good. Most of the internal stuff is specific to the GS500 though - no one makes replacement plane bearings for the GS 500, rods, cam chain guides, etc. You can probably find aftermarket pistons that will work, cam chains, and a few other GS1000 compatible parts. But most of what you'll find will be drag race stuff designed for a GS1000, and will be more expensive than OEM.
