Both my bikes (97 and 07) have sprocket wiggle. My 1988 KLR650 had this as well.
Normal, right? Not a bad sign? I was considering putting a very thin washer beneath the clip to tighten it up just so it couldn't wobble. Thoughts?
I cannot imagine what purpose that bit of slack could serve other than detriment to the splines.

the washer won't help things. once the splines are worn, it just continues to get worse. you could loctite it... if you really were worried about it.
Hmmmm...maybe I'm not being clear. There is no play rotationally, it's play from side-to-side. In other words, it wobbles a bit because there's a small space between the sprocket and the clip, allowing it to move back and forth slightly.
I ran 89-93 front sprockets without the hub on my 97 GS for 40k miles without a problem but later on when I ran a hubless one on my 02 GS with the rear wheel out of alignment for a while the front sprocket became quite wobbly due to wear in the sprocket bore but the spline shaft was not damaged. Have put another 55k miles on my 02 since then, see Reply #4:

So in other words, that little bit of play is just to allow the chain to self-align? Interesting. I guess it makes sense, though! Good to know. :) Thanks Jack!
