Herro!
My name is Lasse, I'm 24 and I come from Denmark. I've recently acquired a '95 GS500, with 35kkm on the clock. I'm usually into classics, but I had a restoration project that was going to cost way more than I was willing to put in to it, so I benched and found this GS at a very good price.
First thing I am going to do is a service on it, which means oil and oil-filter change, along with measuring the valveclearences. So while I have so much of the bike torn apart, I figure a KN drop in and a rejet would be in order as well.
On the cosmetic side I'm going with a classic clipon set, mounted below the top yoke, gimbel rearsets, and a small flyscreen.
Come winter, I'd like to do a USD/monoswingarm/CBR400 swingarm mod.
Questions:
Where do I get jets in Europe? Which sites for parts in Europe? Wemoto?
Regards, Lasse

Not sure where you could find jets in Denmark, but here are a few links to other European GS500 forums...

just google mikuni carbs and it should show up your local agents in your country or go to a japanese motercycle dealer in your area
Can I make a suggestion? Why not go with the classic looking screen like this one -

I have never been a fan of the puig ones but that is just my opinion.

Thanks for the replies, but I am kind of hooked on the Puig one. I've seen it do nice on other machines.
The "topplate", where the handlebars are mounted, are they interchangeable? Currently I have som aluminium handles bolted to the topplate, but I'd like one that uses regular handlebars, if the clipons don't work for me.
Today I also set about doing the valves. But my thickness gauge is only going down to 0.05, so the other three came up as "tight", but the camfollower was able to move. I'm seeking other gauges, so I can get some correct measurements.
A few pics!

I am just woundering whats the advantage to having clip on handle bars as opposed to the regular ones? Also while Im asking this, whats the weight on the ends of the handle bars for.....less vibration?
By having regular handlebars up there, it is easy to change handlebars, to get a new seating position, or if you're going for another look.
The bar-end weights move the vibrations further out, so the majority of the vibrations will be at the ends and not in the my hands.
I have gs clip ons and they have aluminum bar ends and they dont work as stopping vibrations to your hands.i dont know if these came out standard like this. if they do then i would say they are handle bar plugs incase you fall off and land on them , or they are there to stop your hand grips sliding off on a hot day. my origonal bars had steel ones painted.Your brake lever and clutch leaver have balls on the end to stop you getting impaled when you fall off so handle bar ends should do the same.

I would stick with the clip ons. They look much better than the GS bars and have a similar positon. Plus the clip ons are pretty sought after so think yourself lucky you have em!
I have the original ones like you and I love them. I do not get any vibration at all? Maybe change the bar ends?
What is the general consensus of RTV sealants between the valvecover and cylinderhead.
I have a new gasket at hand, so thats not the problem. Do people use both?
I don't know what the general consensus is... But I'll tell you what I do. I just use RTV (oil resistant kind) on the half-circle parts and just a few spots around the head to keep it in place while I set the cover in place. No leaks yet. Admitting that I only have about 200 miles on it. Dgyver used it on the bottom (between gasket and head), all the way around. Started leaking after about the 4th time the cover was removed (about 15k miles).

Aluminum bar ends are just wrong. The OEM bar ends were lead then solid steel. I use the R&G which are chrome steel. Very heavy. No vibration. The bars are important, too. If you changed to aluminum bars, then you don't have the advantage of the OEM heavy steel bars. Plus the OEM's have that steel slug in the end for the bar end screw. That blob of steel in there has a lot of mass.
To the OP, I have the Gimbel rear sets. I LOVE them. I prefer them over Raask.
To the OP: The top plates are interchangeable. 2 bolts hold them to the top triple.

Well now I know why mine give me no trouble because they are original and not futzed with ;)
Yea, I made the mistake of replacing my stock bent bars with AL renthal bars. BUZZZZZZY.
Eventually went down at 5mph on a cold morning cause I wasn't being careful, and replaced them with the beautiful set that adidasguy sent me. I don't have enough thanks to give him.
Thanks Adidas i now know they are not standard ,ill make up some stainless steel ones to the same as the oem bars that should cure the numb hands
When I switched to bar end mirrors, my bars shook so much that the mirrors were useless at engine speeds over 4500 RPM. My solution was to fill my bars with BBs, and it's worked so far.

Also serves the dual purpose as ammo for when some idiot cager tries to enter your lane.

With the proper tools, the rest went fine. Only one shim needed change. Both inlets were at(above) ~0,03mm., one exhaust was 0,05 and the last needed change.
So I'm all good for the next 6000km.
I haven't ridden the bike yet, so I'm holding off on the rejetting, though I have bought a set of 125 and 127,5'es.
FYI on bars: I weighed a new 89 clip on bar (yes, I found another new old stock bar! Came in today's mail from England) and it comes in a 12.6 oz.
I'm guessing the bar end is about the same or at least 10 oz.
I lot more mass than aluminum bars and those pretty, foofoo aluminum bar ends.
I got these bar end weights that are meant for a scooter, but work on the GS500. The heavier ones work fine...

Knowing this, should I fill my bars with an extremely dense, fine texture cement?
I wont feel a thing, right?
Well, your bars are the right ones. Filling would make them heavier. Not sure what that would do. Do you want them heavier?

IDK, I get a slight vibration at 8k, dont bother me. But none would be sweet. Ill try bb's first.
I rarely hit 8k RPM. 7k puts me at 75mph.
BB's are denser that cement powder. You could stuff in old Christmas fruit cake. That's pretty dense.
Maybe some steel rods wrapped in soft rubber/neoprene jammed in the bar.
Be sure you have the 4 small rubber bumpers that go between the top plate and the top of the triple. That helps dampen vibration to the bars.
FYI: Stock bar end weight is 10.4 oz. Just stopped by my office weighed one as I tried to figure out what we are supposed to photograph since I don't understand Ausie very well.
By the way, if you do go the BB route, make sure that you don't plan to remove your left side bar end for any reason. When I swapped mirrors, and later, grips, they just pour out. They're kind of annoying.
BB's won't fall out of the OEM clip ons. There is a steel slug in the end with the threads for the bar end screw. The inner end has a plastic cap. You'd pour them in there and put the cap on.

True; I should have qualified that previous statement. They will pour out if you run aftermarket bars or OEM bars that used the expanding rubber sleeve. Good catch.

Hi Lasse,
You can get jets in Denmark from http://www.kgi.dk/search.php?ids=1&src=+dyse
Or you can buy them from ebay UK or Germany.
