Title: First ever Bike Mod
Post by: codajastal on February 13, 2012, 11:50:31 PM
This is my first ever upload or mod of my GS500. Hopefully they will get better and more interesting.
Constructive criticism is appreciated.
Remember I know NOTHING about bikes apart from the 30+ years of riding them.

The early models definitely have a tail light the size of a house brick. Nice upgrade, what's next?

Looks good!  Almost makes me wish I'd gotten one of those instead of the stock r1 taillight.  Almost.

Very nice mate.

Are you keeping the factory blinkers on or planning to remove them?

I have smaller low profile blinkers to go on front and back. I have a SV60 chain guard and Shockie to go on. but have not really thought that far ahead.

Removing factory blinkers and I have smaller low profile blinkers to go on front and back as I do not know the law regarding the blinkers on the tail light.

I also have a numberplate bracket coming so I can attach the plate to the underside of the seat/guard when I cut off the fender

I'll probably do that to mine also one day but for the next 3 years needing p-plates its a good wind free place to put them.

Let me know what you find for the blinkers as I'm thinking of getting low profile ones also.

The bracket I have coming has the facility to attach the blinkers and I have some tiny 2 inch led blinkers to attach when it arrives.

More than you ever wanted to know about indicators taken directly from ADRs

6.3. DIRECTION-INDICATOR LAMP
6.3.1. Number
Two per side.
6.3.2. Arrangement
Two front indicators (category 1 as specified in Regulation No. 6 or category 11  specified in Regulation No. 50).
Two rear indicators (category 2 as specified in Regulation No. 6 or category 12 specified in Regulation No. 50).
6.3.3. Position
6.3.3.1. in width: For front indicators, the following requirements shall all be
met:
1. there shall be a minimum distance of 240 mm between illuminating surfaces,
2. the indicators shall be situated outside the longitudinal vertical plane tangential to the outer edges of the illuminating surface of the headlamp(s),
3. there shall be a minimum distance between the illuminating surface of the indicators and passing beam headlamp closest to one another as follows:

For rear indicators, the clearance between the inner edges of the two illuminating surfaces shall be at least 180 mm on the condition that the prescriptions of paragraph 2.11. are applied even when the registration plate is mounted;

6.3.3.2. in height: not less than 350 mm nor more than 1,200 mm above the
ground;
6.3.3.3. in length: the forward distance between the centre reference of the rear
indicators and the transverse plane which constitutes the rearmost limit of
the vehicle's over-all length shall not exceed 300 mm.
6.3.4. Geometric visibility
Horizontal angles: 20 degrees inwards, 80 degrees outwards
Vertical angles; 15 degrees above and below the horizontal.
The vertical angle below the horizontal may be reduced to 5 degrees ,
however, if the height of the lamps is less than 750 mm.
6.3.5. Orientation
The front direction indicators may move in line with the steering angle.
6.3.6. May not be "combined" with any other lamp.
6.3.7. May not be "reciprocally incorporated" with any other lamp.
6.3.8. Electrical connections
Direction-indicator  lamps  shall  switch  on  independently  of  the  other
lamps.  All direction-indicator lamps on one side of a vehicle shall be
switched on and off by means of one control.
6.3.9. "Operating" tell-tale
Mandatory. This may be optical or auditory or both. If it is optical it shall
be (a) flashing green lamp(s), which, in the event of defective operation
of any of the direction indicators, is extinguished, remains alight without
flashing, or shows a marked change of frequency.
6.3.10. Other requirements
The characteristics  indicated  below  shall  be  measured  with  no  other
load  on  the electrical system than that required for the operation of the
engine and the lighting devices. For all vehicles:
6.3.10.1. the light flashing frequency shall be 90 +/- 30 times per minute;
6.3.10.2. the flashing of the direction indicators on the same  side of the vehicle
may occur synchronously or alternately;
6.3.10.3. operation of the light-signal control shall be followed within not more
than one second by the appearance of the light and within not more than
one-and-one half seconds by the first extinction of the light.
6.3.10.4. In the event of failure, other than a short circuit, of one direction
indicator lamp, the other(s) direction indicator lamp(s) indicating the
same direction must continue to flash or  remain  alight,  but  the
frequency  in  this  condition  may  be  different  from  that prescribed.

Yes I will keep them for exactly that reason. Course would have been better if I didn't have too.
Dont the new R1's have the intigrated lights?

Yes,

The rule I think is 45kg on your tail, measure out 88cm straight then come up at 45 till you hit your fender. That should give you a guide.

Looks good!  Almost makes me wish I'd gotten one of those instead of the stock r1 taillight.  Almost.
Do you have any pics of the R1 install you did?  I love what codajastal did, it looks great.  But I just want the look of the lense and wanted to know if thats a straight swap for the R1?

Thanks,

Thanks,

Straight swap.  Took about 10 minutes (only because I had to find some appropriate sheet metal screws to install it with.  Mine came off an 01 (which supposedly fits a little better).  No trimming, no anything required, just screws on.

I'll get a pic of it this afternoon for you.  Greatly updates the look of the bike.

Very cool, thanks for the info.  So just to be clear, this is a straight lens swap correct?  remove stock GS tail light lens and put the R1 lens over top right?

Yep.  The stock taillight has bolts and uses nuts to secure it.  The R1 taillight needs screws.

Not Exactly the same.. but I'm using a Stock 05 tail light cover, with a cheapo LED taillight backing. With integrated LED blinkers as well.
