Picked this bike up last November from a seller in Toronto, Canada. This is my first bike. I've always liked the look of naked bikes over faired bikes. Wanted to start small so that my insurance premiums would remain low...also, I don't think I'd want to learn on a bike with 600cc + type power.
The bike as I bought it:

The Goal is to have her looking similar to this...Saw this bike last week on this forum and it totally changed the direction of my build

My Plans:
Kinda in this order:
-Cut the subframe shorter; remove lower bracing and re-weld diagonal canti-lever beams.
-Scruff frame/prime/paint black
-Fit the front seat of a Hyosung gt250 onto the frame.
-Fit a bandit 400 hugger onto the swingarm (in the mail)
-Fit a 07 R6 rear shock (in the mail)
-Install GSXR Front end (done)
-Fit wider 160/60/17 tires onto a '03 GSX600 wheel fit it to the swingarm (have the wheel, need the tires)
-Find a chin spoiler somewhere...
-New Speedo.....no clue as of yet Acewell/Koso
-New light assembly(all around).....no clue as of yet
-Paint all plastics and Tank White...
-Find a gold MX Handlebar and bar-risers to match
-K&N Filter
-Clean and Re-Jet Carbs (no clue what-so-ever how to do this)
-Odds and Ends - pegs, longer front brake lines, grips,
The bike after I started wrenching on it:

Took out the engine and all wiring while the weather was still warm. Then brought it inside to start the winter modifications.
This is the bike indoors:

Picked this up on ebay for $350 US. 04/05 GSXR 600/750 Front End.
Came with everything I needed on the front end (except upper triple)...tire isn't good for the road. Will find a good touring tire.
Sent the triples out to a guy to get a spacer made and the GS stem pressed into the GSXR lower triple.
A few more pics (sorry for the crappy pics):

More pics to come...I've got limited funds at the moment, due to other more pressing obligations but I will update this thread as the project progresses.
Thanks

That blue tank and plastics are soooooo beautiful. It would be a crime against humanity to paint it.
On the other hand, there are so many ugly, homeless and orphaned tanks just begging for someone to paint them and give them some love and a good home.
I love streetfighter builds. I don't know if you can make a bobber out of the GS 'cause of the rake but keep posting pics. :thumb:
If I was still up in NH, I would be driving up there to trade you my dinged blue tank for that pristine one...
PLEASEEEEE don't murder it, sell/trade it for one that's already painted. Adidasguy has a stockpile of them!!!
Other than that, im anxiously waiting to see how it looks, if it pans out, I may copy.

The tank has one small dent from the PO...I take it that it's hard to find these tanks? It's in EXCELLENT condition on the inside (from what I can see)...and its ODD that you mention NH, I'm a UNH grad
Project is on a semi-hold, flying out to Orlando next week for work...after that, I plan to finally cut the frame and start modding the GSXR triple to use bar clamps. Going to use Aluminum and neoprene assist with vibration and force distribution for the underside since it's weak cast
I just wanted to get a quick look at her with the wheels (kinda) on...

Made some progress over the last week....finally picked up some parts I had waiting for me in Niagara Falls...

So I got to cutting after I picked up some power tools this weekend....As you can see, the Hyosung 250 seat that I bought didn't quite wrap around the tank so I had to remove some material. Still not a good fit, but I will figure it out when I get there.
You can also notice the new rear shock from a Yamaha 07 R6
I might cut off the remaining metal from the lower subframe...I still don't know what I'll be doing with it yet...I'm thinking I want the lower subframe to "round" upwards, starting from the main frame and welded right below where the back of the new upper subframe is.
I'm pretty happy with the angle of the seat...I'm going to mock up a subframe out of 3/4" wood and see how it is before I get it to a welder.

More to come soon....
Neat project. I like the bike youre aiming towards. IT should be nice. Keep it up.
Cheers
Thanks, I'm 33% finished at this point....
progress this week:
partially mounted the handlebar risers. If you look closely in the pic, you will see a huge gap between the riser and triple. The riser was meant for a special triple and came with special bolts. I need to somehow find a M12 x 1.25 x 30 to 35mm hex socket bolt.
I also threw on the MX handlebar to get a feel of the layout...it's a little wide, might cut it down an inch or so.
Did a little work to the seat, I designed the upper part of the subframe using 3/4" wood strips, just need to have them welded now.
Also, just ordered a longer SS front brake line and my headlight....it's a MT-03 replica from Germany

brackets will be anodized black.
Next purchases will be a set of tires - 120/70 upfront and 150/60 in back....160/60 if they are a slimmer fit and a KOSO gauge. Hope to have the subframe welded next weekend....

? (i used to have a good contact with Winzer corp, could prob look him up and pass you the # if you want)
Or if you have a bolt supply business in town, you might find them there. Can't wait to see what you do with the welder and the subframe.
That seat looks gigantic. Maybe it is just the angle.
Good Work! Need more updates! Sorry, I never get enough of this stuff,...

Yea, I have a Fastenal around me..going there to go put in an order for the bolts. Thanks ... Oh and once I get start striping the frame/tank I'll really start documenting and taking better pics...

I was wondering about that as well - it's "E-Marked" which I believe makes it usable in Europe....doubt it is approved for use here in N. America....but, there are ways around that....I thought the DOT approval was for the bulbs anyway? :dunno_black:
heyo, how'd i miss this build thread??
Good work so far! keep up the good photos!!

Money is low for this build....sold some old parts, still waiting for my headlight to clear customs, hopefully will be here in a week, sorted out the riser issue, just ordered a Moty Design batteryhttp://www.motydesign.com/product.php?batteries=8-cell-battery (http://www.motydesign.com/product.php?batteries=8-cell-battery)
And a Koso XR-SR gauge http://www.kosonorthamerica.com/new/shop/atv/xr-sr-speedometer-multi-functions-4/ (http://www.kosonorthamerica.com/new/shop/atv/xr-sr-speedometer-multi-functions-4/)
Need tires....anybody have recommendations for daily commuting? 120/70 front & 150/70 or 160/60 rear
I'm really interested in this build. I have a 1992 GS500 that I want to do something similar with. I'm hoping it'll be street-legal but track-worthy.
I did a concept sketch in Photoshop.

Yes, yes and yes. It's a rough sketch.
Well,
After months of partying and travelling...football season is back and I now have some time to relax and work on the bike...so this is where we are...
I found a local fabricator and asked him to fab up a new subframe for the solo seat/bobber look...well...it didn't come out as planned...(sorry for the crappy pics)
Frame As delivered to welder...wanted the seat to fit like this...
Well here it is as he saw fit....

As you see the angle is way off from what I wanted, he didn't factor in any support for the under the seat (it would be supported by the lock mechanism)....I was livid...told him to cut it off and reweld it the way I asked him to...back and forth argument...I said screw it and decided to take it home and go with my original plan.....
Hyosung tail, shortened width wise...about an 1.5" or so....
Now my problem is....I need to make up something to support the tail and I need suggestions...should I weld up supports or should I just screw in a series of heavy gauge sheet metal bent/riveted together to form a support cradle under the passenger seat on the tail (bike will be solo seat)

Wheell.... if he's a professional welder... maybe he knows something you dont. Like maybe, what you were asking for, would not support your weight for long?
Maybe you should be grateful for his hardheadedness. Odds are, if you found out the hard way, it might be too late for you to go back and thank him for his expert opinion :-}

Always has to be that one person. :icon_rolleyes:...
no, he did not do his job...I asked for something and he didn't do it...if he couldn't do what I asked for then he should of informed me...there really isn't anything to it....I'm paying for a service, give me what I pay for or don't do it
Fookin do what I say! I think it's STEEL and basic geometry could get you what you wanted and you could stand on it, jump up and down, whatever on it.
Not sure what you have to work with but I made my locating points to mount the tail first. Afterwards I welded (you could bolt on) a crossbar and located where the seat would ride best and mounted it. Admittedly it took me quite awhile, on off, on off, on off, trying to figure out the best place for it.
If you're going to use that tail, you have quite a bit off arse hanging past your support. I'd prob look for some 3/16" to 1/8" flat bar to where I could get the support in and bolt it on to what genius welder did. I'm guessing there are supports points that I can't see in the pic. If you bend, shape, bolt on and meet your mounting points at the angle you want, I don't think you'll have any issues with tail support since it is a solo.
Was looking at pics again, and blacked out, you could still do what you want. You could make a cowl to help cover the subframe and hide it. Bolt on your seat support to what's there and be in action. The cowl (plastic, thin metal) could hide some wiring and also give you good place to mount led tail light under seat (?). Thanks for the opp to use my mad paint skillz! heheh Just imagine the red as black. Did red so you could see it.

I had the same exact thought, but I felt that It would be the same amount of hastle to fab up plastic to cover he metal used to raise the seat up...I'm just going to go with the tail, might as well (for now).
Anyhow....
Haven't done much....picked up a used rear tire so I could get the bike together and have it rolling...
With no tail....disregard the high headlight....just seeing how to mount the steering damper without it interfering with headlight

tail, belly pan and hugger ...which is for sale as it will not compliment the look of the bike
(https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/10303_10100406875041061_792720412_n.jpg)
Still need to figure out the tail mounting and how I will fill that passenger seat hole....I will thinking heatforming lexan and bonding it to the ABS tail...
Good plan and it's getting there mate, looking forward to be completed rebuild ;)
A work in progress. Personally do not like the bob. But plenty of others people do. To each their own eh. Thank you for sharing your project.
Scrolled through thinking it'd be nice to see the tail width in relation to the tank/frame. Its early here, so i double checked before pleading for the photo. low and behold, you had taken it already!
I think that its going to look fantastic after button up!! The width of the tail fits sniiicely and the bigger rear wheel will compliment for sure. Good work, stoked to see the progress!
Thanks for watching guys...I had picked up another tail from a pocketbike....but it doesn't look good in comparison to this tail....I finally, kinda got the bike "together"....
final things to do before I fully reassemble and tear back down for painting...
-make tail mounts and bracing
-cut up some vinyl sheets for an undertail
-sheet metal electronics mount for seats under tail/behind the seat
-mount exhaust/chop stock muffler down angle pipe upwards slightly
-figure out wiring out back once I make space for all the wires.
-make a new seat out of the hyosung seat that I currently have
Here's how she sits as of today...

Next up, reassembly to get all the wiring sorted out, figure out the remainder of the subframe and have the aluminum welded/reinforced.
Need tires, found a Ducatti Monster can for cheap, gonna cut it and mount it under the frame....Sold the MT-03 headlight, going to get a 7" round light, turns and tail light....lastly, need to figure our what I'm doing for a tail/seat. This is costing me far too much.
Picked up the bike last night, welder/machinist did a damn great Job.
Brought it back to my apartment and put it together in my dining room....effing love the feel, just need to figure out my tail situation....I need a nice stubby tail or another pocketbike tail that doesn't look so crazy like the one on there now.....will be figuring out the subframe in a few weeks when I'm not so poor

I wanted to do that originally,
But over time with all the directions this thing took I stepped away from that idea. Plus everyone seems to be using that same seat, I want to stand out just a little.

With this tail when it is all painted and the motor is in, I feel like it would look like a tiny motorcycle sitting on a huge motor! Hahaha
Nice job!! did this GSXR front end fit without problems?
