Title: Justins Brainstorming thread! -new title-
Post by: xunedeinx on February 15, 2012, 11:40:54 PM
I think I decided on an ex500 engine for my first motorcycle build, don't want to get in over my head with an I4, electronics, etc. Im No CBRFX87 or Buddha, ya know!

Posted this idea over on ex-500.com

QuoteHey guys, I'm pretty aactive on gstwins as the same username, and origionally I was torn between the gs and the ex500...

Now, I've been looking into more reliable power, and being I've maxed out my mods I can currently do for my bike and still have it reliable (its my daily driver)...I've come to the engine swap stage.

First off, im torn between an ex500 and a 650r, their both twins, should fit with minimal work.

Ex500 would be easier, being most electronics and chain type are the same.

The big question is:

The carbs in my gs are three circuit, I have a pilot, mid-main, and a main, which makes for better tune-ability than the old twin circuit carbs on older gs's.

From what I read, ex500's also have twin circuit carbs.

This may be uncharted territory, but should I find a wrecked or untitalable ex500 and make the engine work in my chassis, what problems would I have running my carbs?

From what I read, stock jetting for your carbs is around 130.
Our stock jets are Pilot 17.5, Mid Main 60, Main 130

Right now im running 22.5, 65, 145 with a k&n filter and r6r exhaust with no dead spots, and spark heat seems perfect.

Now, if I stuck my stock jets back in my carbs, and plopped my carbs on the ex500 engine, theoretically it should run the same as your carbs, except I have a mid-main so I'll have a flatter powerband.

FOG, if your out there, or anyone that has ever charted into this Territory, please, chime in.

And, if you wish to jump on gstwins.com, your more than welcome!!!

-Justin

I was just wondering if anyone had attempted that before.....

Good luck!

I'm not against it, I just wonder why you would do it.

Water cooled, 20cc's more displacement, 12hp more at the wheel, easy to work on.

Plus, I can find a donor bike for 200 bucks thats been in a front end collision for almost nothing.

And, no frame mods necessary.

IDK, cause I can?

"donor bike for 200 bucks" <<- this

I looked at the ex500 specs, trying to see why you'd go that route xune, but you answered it with the donor bike part.  I'm a big fan of 'use what you got.'

Can't wait to see your ingenuity put this together if you decide to do it!  :woohoo:

IDK, 650r's are getting pretty cheap now, and a lot of people are wrecking them. May wind up being a 650r when the time comes.

It'll still fit just as easily though.

Wow, the kawa 650r is a good looking beast.  what surprises me, however, is that according to cycle-ergo.com, it's even more of an upright position, than our gs500. Feels like a standard, looks like a sportbike. wiiierd :)

(the 650r is even more upright than the sv650 NON-s model)

Its true, sat one a showroom new one, its as upright as a harley. Only the floor pegs are below you, not forward mount.

I've been on a few H-D bikes that had mid-controls. When I end up with a Sportster project, that's how I'll set it up.

That'd be a project, shove an 883 into a gs frame, and turbo the low compression Buddha Loves You all to hell.

Forget the 883 - go with a Blast motor.

Either way, can't wait to see what you do!

When it comes time, im going to scour craigslist and auctions for some broken non-fixable bike, and whatever it is as long as its cheap, its going in my fframe.

Dont care if its an r6, 883, buell, BMW, or even a friggin goldwing. Its happening.

Seamax, I love your bike!  Do you have anywhere where you have more pics of it?

Thanks!

Edit:  Nevermind, found a bunch via google!  Did you have a build thread?  I'd love to see the work you put into it.

The great Seamax,...living inspiration.  THE best looking GS that I've ever seen.  My humble two cents.

would a 500 2 stroke be too radical for street use?

Both = fail

650r = owns a gs and ex simultaneously, while eating their lunch annnnnnd smacking their moms around

go with the new 650R I2 those things make 20 more HP than a GS and 10ish more than a EX and gobs more torque, Would seriously put the little GS500 in a new class, it could be called a GSX650R! (GS model 4 valve 650cc R because thats the letter of the bike it came from)

Another interesting swap could be a GSX650F engine swap...

I should grab the Kawisaki 420 2 cycle engine that my buddy has in the corner of his shop. put it into a shifter kart or something. lol

Ok, how about, I powder coat every bit of the bike black, except the rims, and the headlight ring. They, along with my future stainless chain guard will be powder coated the same colour of my r6r can...

AND..

Imagine this...

I weld up a nice header set out of u-bends, do a proper x-pipe setup where the H is (its still an ongoing debate in the car world, but its been proven that x is better in mid-high rpms, and h is better in low-mid rpms), run the two headers to the bottom of the bike, and situate the R6 can more closer to where it is on the R6, its lower and more angled up, not out.

And finally, jet-black ceramic coat the whole header-pipe kittin-ka-bootle.

And anodize my carbs black.

And maybe get an unmatching set of rear fairings from adidasguy, and cut off the front half, and make the bike a solo bike.....

Anyone handy with photoshop?

You see where the slit is for the "air intake" in the rear fairings, glass it to the front part, remake the seat, and remake the subframe. basically chop it in half, and move it up. And get rid of the fugly passenger footpegs.

I'm going for a clean look, not a bobber or chopped look. As if it came factory w/ a solo seat this way.

Sorts like this:

Only not a crappy photochop.

Address the subframe relocation. If I reuse the existing seat pan and form/plastic weld it to work, than upholster it it will look swift.

Address the rear master cylinder, find a way to clean up the brake fluid hose, or make it more subtle. Maybe different brake cylinder + rearsets from a different bike?

Def would need a rear hugger, and some form of undertail glassed/fabbed up

ugh, and that ugly stock exhaust. If I use oval stock like they do on some cars, I can make it appear more slim from the sides, and with the lower mount r6r can, it would look very smooth, especially if its jet-coated ceramic black.

While im still on a caffeine buzz...

Obviously the electronics and battery issue would need to be addressed.

Perfect spot, and I've thought of doing it allready, is where the stock airbox was. With the K&N there, I got more than enough room for all the electronics, and the battery.

While I'm at it, I can make the rear fairings slimmer (height wise) to be slightly more edgy, and less blocky, like some newer bikes.

All in all, this should shave off a lot of weight, centralize a lot of weight, and basically make my bike the perfect bike (in my mind)

Screw resale value, this has the possibility to be BADASS

http://www.ex-500.com/index.php/topic,19893.0.html

comparing that, to the gs500, it seems very simular as well, except for the clutch cable being on the opposite side.

BTW

Dry weight of engine carbs and fluids for ex500 is 115 lbs

dry weight of gs500 engine minus fluids and carbs is 140+ depending on year.

That + 10 extra hp and equal tq is reason enough for a transplant.

Wet weight of ex500 is 440lb
wet weight of gs500e is 443lb

I've all ready dropped a bunch of weight, so I'd guess im around 425/420lbs.

If I drop another 30lbs, I'd be below 400, which is actual sportbike territory.

Than, if I centralize and lower the mass..... Battery and such.

I got a monster on my hands I tell ya!
