Title: Is this the right noise?
Post by: PolarBZ on February 28, 2012, 02:15:29 PM
I've read here and elsewhere that the GS500 has a peculiar noise that sounds, to the unknowing rider, like it could be trouble, but is in reality just a normal GS500 cam noise.

I have a 1998 GS500 that is making A noise but it's hard to tell if its THE noise.

I took a 15 min vid of my commute home the other day just to test out the camera and the makeshift internal helmet mount and I noticed that I can hear the noise in the video too, so I thought maybe someone here could tell me if its THE noise that is normal, or if its *A* noise that might be impending trouble.

Here's the video in all of is unedited glory...

Skip to 3:00 for when I flip up the visor and you can hear the engine (and noise) better.

Other than that, it's just an uneventful trip from almost-work to almost-home.  Police cars at 7:45 are probably the most exciting part.  But if you just don't get enough commuting on your own, then by all means, watch mine.  And feel free to critique my riding too - I don't ride with any groups or other people, so it's just me and the forums to learn from.

:icon_rolleyes: I'm not hearing one thing. Sorry dude. My bike makes a hell of a lot more racket than that aha! Seems to be normal for these bikes though..

I've heard a Katana described as "noisey as a Singer sewing machine"; I think the same could be applied to the GS

Given the position of the breath guard, it looks like he's holding it up with his tongue.

Polar, tell me more about this:

Does the noise go away with a quick blip of the throttle? Is only prevalent when at a stop and bike is warm/hot?

Riot - pictures of the mount... hmmm.. well, the mount was more of a "proof of concept."  It is/was a duct tape pouch that I duct taped to the inside of the helmet.  I took it off after two trial runs because it was pressed against my face more than I liked (as in, squishing my nose to the side and generally being a nuisance).  I like the video view, but due to the angle I had to push it back to, it just has too much facial intereference.

Dizzledan - I think it was more of a nose/chin combination that got the camera into the right place.  The video is of a night out with friends where we went to a "duelling piano bar" called Chopstix here in Tacoma, WA.  Basically, the piano players play whatever songs are requested with the biggest "tip."  Sometimes they call up the patrons for a particular song - good audience participation.  Somewhere in this video is someone we went with for a birthday event...

Twisted - The noise doesn't seem to go away with a throttle blip.  It does seem to be prevelent when the bike is hot/warm, but moving or not moving, it is still there - and it's pitch/tone don't change much regardless of speed or throttle.

Oh, and one other thing - more of a side note really - I got this bike about 1000 miles ago and the mirrors just aren't doing the trick for me - I see most of myself in them.  I would be interested in bar-end mirrors... but where the hell did my bar-ends go?

i got my cam mount issues fixed, bought a cheap sports cam from kmart that came with a helmet mount side mount and handlebar mount for $30 camera is cheap but the mounts have a standard mounting bolt that also fits my playsport and other cameras lol

I have a set of SV650 mirrors and I really like them a lot. Seems like they stick out further than the GS mirrors, and are adjustable at the mount, and the mirror.

Riot - I am definitely considering going with the handlebar mount option right now.  I'm also looking at the suction cup mounts to the tank.  Let me know how the helmet mount works with the Playspot - it just seems like it would be awkward as the playsport is a very flat surface where the lens is.

Dizzledan - I might have to give the 650 mirrors a shot...
