Title: Hesitation at mid RPM
Post by: nmh5028 on March 01, 2012, 07:59:42 AM
I finally got my GS back together after quite a maintenance period. Today was the first extended ride I've been able to take on it since all of the upgrades, and I noticed a hesitation around 4-6k. I experimented a bit on my way to work and this is my best shot at a description of the problem:

Crusing between 4 and 6k, rolling on the throttle gently is normal
Cruising between 4 and 6k, going at or near WOT causes a hesitation, then runs normally
From a stop, accelerating from idle to 8 or 9k with a lot of throttle there is no hesitation anywhere

So in summary, I only notice it when I give it a lot of throttle in the mid RPMs. It recovers after maybe 1/2 second and pulls away just fine, but the lag in response is somewhat annoying.

Since the last time I went on a decent ride, I have done the following:

Opened up my valve clearances to the looser end of the spec
Installed Bob's ignition advancer
Rejetted to 20/60/130 (for a 2001) + 2.75 turns out
Planned on installing a washer on the needles but found out that there was already one there (I think, I'm not quite sure where the washers go but it slid off the bottom when I took it apart, so it wasn't stuck between the clips or anything)

After each of those mods I went for a short ride and didn't notice the problem. Another thing I noticed was that it looks like the PO damaged the 60 size jet on one of the carbs (looks like he tried to remove it and stripped the slot). I didn't replace it since it took nearly a month to get my other jets and I just wanted to get out riding again.

My to-do list includes a carb sync, float height check, and replacing the damaged jet. I don't expect to get around to any of it in the next few weeks, unless one of them is obviously the culprit. I'm hoping its a quick fix (mixture screw, carb sync), but I'd like to hear what everyone else thinks. Thanks in advance

with an ignition advance you need to go up in your main jet maybe about 150 and a decent air filter system .I had the same problem as you coming out of roundabouts and nailing it in third gear .
Went to a thinner needle and put another vacuem tank in andfeed it from the left carb directly to the main fuel chicken .

So you think I'm too small on the main? I didn't think the ignition advance required a rejet, but I guess I only read that for bikes going from 12 to 17 degrees. I guess with my 2001 coming from 5 to 17 degrees makes a bigger difference.

changing your advance requires you to do several things to get the most out of your engine as the manufacturer originaly intended.it does not alter reliability. it increases fuel consumption ,in my case from 70 mpg down to 58 mpg BUT gives an increase in torque and hp the moter is much more aggressive .Example like from 60 mph to 80mph takes about 4 to 5 seconds with speed still building at the same rate and this is in top gear and standard gearing .look at posts i have done and find the one of what i did ,most people only do part of the mod and wonder why they dont get a marked increase in performance.
