Title: 89 factory clip-ons will they work with 2008 tank? revised
Post by: knowles on March 03, 2012, 01:15:56 AM
I am interested in making my E and F. I have the 89 with the factory clip-ons, does anyone know if it will work with the F fairings? Would like to know before i go and buy the fairings.

Since there's extra brackety things you also need to get, to attach the fairings, I'm thinking yoy may be lacking the right mountpoints for them.

Also keep in mind... they added an oil cooler with the F model. This may not be a coincidence: it may be REQUIRED, due to lack of airflow around the engine with the fairing on?

Phil touched on it and I've dwelled on it too.

To convert E to F to start:

Front brakcet (welded to frame on F models, nothing on E models) to hold the nose/headlight fairing
Side brackets (holes in top  main frame rail about halfway down the side, to hold on the brackets for the side fairings)
Rear brackets (2 square shaped brackets welded to the rear frame to mount side rear fairings)
Grab bar is supposedly different, though I haven't been able to check that out yet.

To update it fully, you would need the Oil cooler as there would be limited air flow in the engine. The E engine has an oil pressure check hole, which I THINK may be used in the F model for the oil cooler.

It'd be a lot of work to machine or find the brackets, and then to have them welded to the frame.

You can't add an oil cooler unless you change the bottom of the engine. You do not need the oil cooler.
I did a while write up on clip-ons (should get put in the WIKI but it never was) and all 3 types and how they fit.

The only problem with some is the larger "F" tank. Clip-ons are no problem with the "F" fairing or the OEM optional "E" fairing (Europe only).

Search and you can find an original "E" fairing in Europe. I've got a couple (found one on ebay last week!). They are designed to be added to the "E". I think they were made by TCP for Suzuki in Europe. They never were sold in the USA.
They come in different colors, based on the year, and look like this:

Wow. pretty!
Kinda old ninja-ish, to my eye?
Too bad they didnt go with that styling for the official F's. but I guess that was too

89 clipons work on the f models with about 3/4" clearance on full lock. heres mine (http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z380/twinrat/eaf0f681ca9e__1285331639000clipon3.jpg)

I believe the real question was would the clip-ons get in the way of the fairing and they do not.

Thank you to all for the information. Adidasguy you are right i was wondering if the fairing would hit the bars was my primary concern. You also touched on the tanks in the newer F models not working on the E with the 89 clip-ons. Do you have anymore info like what year tank would work I'm planing on buying a different tank in a few weeks because i like the newer style and i will be doing a rear frame swap with a Ducati monster (just seat, and the frame that the seat sits on). and i have seen how the newer F tanks fit the Ducati monster seat. any more info is always welcome.

Lots of info here:

(Maybe someday this info will get into the WIKI.)

Tanks: 2001+ are all the same and are the newer larger tank
1989-2000 are the older, smaller tanks: all the same, any year is the same (except color, of course)

Are the frames the same? eg will the larger tanks fit onto the earlier models?

They probably would but you would need the seat as well

I was going to buy an 2008 tank and just make the mounting points if need be. Has anyone done this on a 89 with clip-ons? Does the 2008 tank fit the 89 frame? (they haven't changed the frame as far as the gas tank space, right) The ones i have look to be the shortest ride height ones in your pics. I like the height but not the 89 tank. If anyone has done this then i would really like to see what their bike looks like or i might just buy the tank and see if its fits and if not end up getting new bars and top plate for mine because i want the newer tank and rear swap that i want to do more than the clip-ons that are on it.

I don't think I'm going to do the "F" fairings any more, i do like the lower plastics on the euro model adidasgguy has a pic of but the headlight looks like a old CBR, and i like the newer F headlight so i will most likely just do the "F" tank, Ducati seat and rear frame, with different tail/brake light (LED), and make a rear hugger. then next year do the duel headlight.
