Title: Bar end weights
Post by: wolfs02shadow on March 03, 2012, 05:36:03 PM
Nice day today so I decided to take the bike out. When I stop at the store I notice that one of the bar end weights had fell off. Question would be what's the purpose and do I need to replace or just take the other one off.

They are meant to reduce the vibrations from the engine that are being transmitted through the bars to your hands.  If you don't mind the feel of the bike without them then you don't have to have them.  I don't have any on my '01 so I can fit it through my shed door  ;)

When I bought my bike my weights fell apart in my hand while exploring my bike. Long story short either buy bar end mirrors or new bar ends. If you buy new ends either go genuine or something as heavy as your stock items. If you go smaller items they won't take out as much vibration and after a long squirt on the bike you'll find u have pins and needles in your fingers and hands. Trust me I know.

I get pins and needles with my stock ones.

Any recommended heavier ones?

If you've got pins and needles with stock bar ends, upgrade your grips. I've got a pro-grip set I put on last season for $16. Combined with a good pair of gloves, it completely solved the numbness I was getting in my hand.

Nothing heavier than stock. Are your bars stock or aluminum? Steel bars add a lot of mass. How are bars fastened? Stock or somethimng else? Stock or OEM clip-ons have rubber dampers. If after market clip ons attached to the forks - you miss the rubber dampers.

BAR ENDS: Did I hear someone wants to buy some stock bar ends?

Fill the bar with lead shot.

Agree 100%.  These are easily the best "mod" I've done to my bike.

Best place to buy these grips? Link? I've actually done a lot of googling without much success. I had a lot of hand/wrist/thumb pain last season and I think new grips will be a good start to help with my problem.

Shipping to the bottom of the world probably would be more than they are worth.
If rusting, clean them and repaint.

If you want to pay shipping, I can send a clean pair.

Rusting due to being dropped and scraped on both sides.
I will take a closer look to assess repairabilty.

Long story short either buy bar end mirrors [...]
I totally agree on that. They help A LOT to give you a much better view if you install them downwards (no shoulderns or arms blocking the view) and look good for sure!  :thumb:

Mine are installed upwards, and I have no obstructions to my view.  They're on superbike bars for now, but will be on clubmans/clip-ons eventually.

go for throttlemeisters.  You get the heavier ends that knock out more vibration and the best throttle lock on the market.

I have them on all of my bikes..
