I don't know if this would be any interest to other members but I have taken the liberty to contact a reputable cam grinder and ask about have custom lobes grinded for the GS500. The cams would have to be hard welded then the new profile reground into. Profile optios are from street inspired to all out track terror.
Lifts and duration options:
270 duration and .365" lift
to
300+ duration and .520" lift.
Price would depend on what you want but the set I was interested in which was to fatten up overall driving dynamic add and more hp in the 6K-10K range was offered at $280 shipped with a cam core return.
I don't know if anyone has tried this before or iff this is of interest to the community but I figured I would check. Also he can get springs to help with wild lift and suration for a reasonable cost. I think he said $70 for a full set.
If somebody tests first to see if it clearances the stock pistons, than I'd be game.
I will stick with stock motor setup for reliability.
My 2 cents.
Duration usually will not hurt reliability on such a low power motor. Its a non interference motor and can handle a lot more duration.
Duration will kill rideability, it will run worse and worse @ low rpm with more and more duration. And the GS already has tons of duration really.
Extra lift will make for the opposite in terms of rideablity. It will make torque and be really peppy and sweet till 5-6K and there it would start to run out of rideability. And lift will cause all sorts of issues, it will cause valve float more easy, your valve springs will start to bind and you're looking @ a whole lot of expensive head and valve work to get a 11K redline with extra lift.
So duration for reliability but not rideability, and lift for rideability with a huge $$$$ outlay.
Now here is the coolest part.
Swapping the GS motor with a GR motor will get you both ... all yo uneed to do is ... well hack the frame to bits and put it back together like a demented jigsaw puzzle. Then oh yea it will run like a cruiser.
Cool.

I would say a little advance maybe a slight duration and lift with some honycomb springs (find out whatever f%$king kinda springs they had on a CBR250RR) and then spin the damn thing to 12 :)
Really good of you to offer, but I think Megacycle cams out here in California already offers a bunch of grinds for the GS, including a few that are fine with the stock buckets and pistons.

Im pretty sure it is an interference engine. :dunno_black:

You're right Gregvhen. And welcome back
I am near about sure its non interference ... wasn't it dgyver that posted - searching.
Cool.

Cant find it. Anyway, I'll wait for someone with first hand knowledge ...

If it is not interference then how do valves get bent/broken when the timing is off??
-Jessie
It's an interference engine as far as I'm concerned and it doesn't have to be out of time for it to crash. My 02 had a sticking bucket and one cold morning it stuck with an exhaust valve wide open while just cranking to start. It went bang and stopped locked up with that exhaust valve broken off. When head was pulled marks showed the exhaust valve had hit the intake valve as well as the piston top. Can't say if the open exhaust valve hit both the intake valve and the piston before breaking but it crashed and marked both.

I have heard something like the piston wont hit the valves but the valves hit each other ...
I am really not sure now at all sorry.

Why not just use a proven source ... Megacycle Cams.
