Title: Question about a relay for those of us electronicly minded.

Seen several slightly different tutorials online about how to wire up some 12v accessories.

My question has to do with the relay portion of the project.

This is the relay i am using and the diagram printed on the side of the relay.
(ignore my garage door opener with velcro, its not part of the relay)

The guy at jaycar (who apparently knows what hes talking about according to his collegues)
told me to do this.

12v in from the battery to tab numbered 87 (horizontal one at bottom of pic)
12v out to accessories from tab number 30 (vertical at top)
for the switched power he simply said to cut my tail light positive wire and attach each end to one of the other two vertical tabs (left and right) numbered 86 and 85.


is that correct?
he said nothing needs to go to ground because the relay has ground built in. but does that mean i need to ground the relay by bolting it to the frame using the attached mount in top picture.

here is the description of the relay from their site: (its a 30A relay)
Similar to SY-4068, except it is double-throw. Ideal for situations where a secondary device needs to be activated, while also disabling a primary device.

and the SY-4068 says:
Whilst designed for auto horns, this relay is ideal for any high current application i.e. burglar alarms, ignition cutout, transmitters, car spotlights etc., - as well as for horns! SPST normally open contacts. - Contact current (max) 40A- Contact voltage (nom) 12V - Nominal coil voltage 12V.

Diagram is pretty clear (at least to me - I love electricity!)

Don't cut your tail light. Not sure why someone would suggest that.

A GS wiring diagram helps. Its on the WIKI.

#85 and #86 are the coil of the relay. Polarity doesn't matter. One goes to ground - any ground. Frame, a black/white wire or any ground. The other wire goes to something that gets switched on when the bike is on. You can tap off of the wires from the ignition switch or the running light wire. I believe it is a brown wire going to the tail light and to the front running light ("F"'s have it, "E"'s have the brown wire going nowhere in the headlight bucket).

Then, you control the devices with pins 30 and 87. Again, polarity doesn't matter. One goes to +12 which can be the battery or off of the ignition. Pick a big wire and I suggest a fuse in-line for safety. The running light is a small, low current wire which won't handle a few amps if you connect up lots of stuff. The other wire/terminal goes to your equipment.

Terminal 87a is not used

And then your equipment's ground must connect to ground anywhere. Frame is OK or a black/white wire. Headlight ground wire is a hefty wire you can tap in to. Best is to get a spade or ring terminal and go right back to the battery.

There are various crimp on connectors/tap-offs so you do not have to cut into any wires. Pick a tap-off for the wire size you are using. Too small a size can cut your wire. Too big a size won't make good connection.

just some 12v outlets. one on each side on the inside of the fairing just under the bars.

im going to do a speaker install but that will be a separate circuit.

Does anyone have a pic of the tap in things mentioned so I know what to buy.

also is heat shrink fine to cover the solder joints or should I use something more rugged/ waterproof

In my opinion heat shrink will do just fine as the relais is seated under the fairing. I don't expect water to get in there, but If you wanna be totally safe, use s.th. waterproof.

Installing the relais near the battery under your seat was no option? Cause thet is, where I placed the relais for my new horns.

The tap-off things are wire splice connectors. They come in many different styles.

Thanks mate. I've got it wired up. pics to come.

Gotta decide how to more permanently fix the outlets to the bike.
ATM it is with double sided tape.

Wire strap or duck tape work well.
