Just come back installing a new set of bar risers as per title.
Looked across both the Wiki and the forum, I would've tried buying a set of up-and-back risers but decided that the hassle of re-routing cables, hoses, etc. was not for me (yes, I'm lazy and I want to mess up as few things as possible).
So I sourced this set of straight-up cast alloy 30-mm (1.2 in) risers from UK via eBay (37 GBP = 45 EUR shipped).

First impressions:
The riding position actually feels more upright (not too much, though), anyway the real field test will take place when my riding season begins (i.e. in about one month).
I didnt't have to make any modifications of sort, choke/clutch/throttle cables and brake line seem to be fine if a bit tight. I tried to create some slack in the wiring harness but that didn't change much. I reckon a different kind of risers would require some work - as of now I cannot even adjust the bars a little bit.
I'll keep an update as soon as I can actually take a ride.

I'm 181 cm (= 5 ft 11 in) tall.
FYI i've got the 1" rise & 1" pullback Motech risers installed on my 2008 and there is no re-routing of cables needed,just pop the brake line out of the rubber clamp and tie it down is all thats needed takes about 3 minutes.
Mark may I ask where you got the risers from.

I have the GenMar risers that are 1" up and 1 3/8" back. Put them on my 97 GS and transferred them to my current 02 GS. That moves bars about 1.75" on the diagonal and I'd say that's about as far as you can go without getting a longer brake hose. Enough wires to pull out of headlight housing also but I had to re-route the choke cable on both bikes. It goes around the left fork tube and a hard right parking lot turn pulls the choke open and races the engine unless the cable is run behind the left fork tube with the GenMars.

I'm going to ride my bike for the first time with the risers on, in the next days (hopefully tomorrow if the weather is OK).
Some days ago I took it for a quick spin into my parking lot (positively no open road - still no insurance then!), as far as controls are concerned I could feel no difference, clutch/throttle/front brake seemed to be all right as if nothing had changed. Riding position is a bit more upright - even though not by much. I'm curious to see how it feels on the long run.
Question - take a look at the first pic (ie my GS with risers installed), you can see there's a fair bit of space left between the top caps and risers.
Should I be worried about that or will I be fine - as long as I keep the bolts tight, of course?
I plan on carrying a suitable Allen key with me for this.
Remarks? Suggestions?

I changed my handlebars to ones with less rake, when I do a long stint it hurts bending my elbows back so hopefully if I put some risers on they will correct my problem.
I finally took a proper test ride this morning (2012 riding season is officially open!) Just 20 kms but it was enough to get in touch with the new setup.
My first impressions about the risers are definitely OK - the riding position is better, more comfortable and all controls give exactly the same feedback as they did with no risers, ie no problems on clutch, throttle, choke etc.
Hope it goes on like that!

Great info there bud. I just got mine and was woundering if I had to change anything. Its nice that you just need to pop the break line out of the rubber. Thanks

very welcome,3000 miles later with no problems.If you have the SW Motech's be careful of the allen bolts as they strip easy,i've got 1 stubborn bolt on the top that stripped from gentle tightening.
