Title: Handling Issues.
Post by: slipperymongoose on March 11, 2012, 01:53:21 AM
So out on our 500km ride today with Mister, Cods and Twisted and a visitor from Scotland. About 1/2 way into the ride on some lets be honest bumpy road I found suddenly I was bouncing along more than usual. Then I heard the sound of metal clinking together, this went on for serveral kilometres with my cornering getting worse and worse. Finally i pulled over when I thought something definetly doesnt feel right. So discovered my rear shock had totally crapped itself 170km from home, spewing its oil all over itself and the assoiated linkages. I nursed it from then on to our lunch break and afterwards as best I could but at one point I had to pull over to gather myself and Cods got great view of my very first lowside. I turned off the road onto a dirt patch just after a hairpin only going about 40ish km/h the soil was looser than it looked and as I slowed my front locked up and down I went at about 20km/h. Thank god  for my oggy knobs and my gear. Myself, the bike and my gear are all fine, just a few scratches on the knobs, bent handlebars and dented pride. Here is the end result when I nursed it home with a very sore behind from all that bouncing.

Love the post :thumb:

Honestly all things considered we are all fine and no-one died. Not an expensive fix so it really was a fun day. :thumb:

Talk about self destructing Gs's. I gotta try and hunt a few bolts for my rear calliper now.  :icon_neutral:

The second and third shocks you linked to have the wrong bottom connector for the gs.
They are cheap, but then check out postage to australia. On a couple I have found postage is twice the price of the shock.

Riding that GS without a rear shock was fun was it not!  Bought my current 02 GS with about 4500 miles on it and it soon showed some rear shock leakage and I kept riding it and was about 20-30 miles from home one day when the shock oil level got low enough to loose all damping action.  Quite an experience, the rear end would just skip out sideways with the slightest hint of a bump in a turn even in a modest turn on paved roads.  Bike had only 6k miles on it when I replaced that shock and I'll never neglect a leaking shock again.

Yeah mine completely went out on the ride so I had no choice. Well looks like I'll be importing my new shock from America. A bloke in Victoria wants $350 for a r6 shock

Well was stripping the handlebars when my bar end mirror fell out and snapped off. So even with a new shock I still gotta get handlebars and mirrors

I have a friend whose mother is Chinese. I make fun of him...I say "You're so American...you.r mom was made in China!"

Pretty clever if I do say so myself.

As a side note..why the f%$k is "you.r mom" censored. I mean, REALLY?

That's a hell of a story. Happy that it's working out for you. All this talk about not having rear shocks reminds me of the time my friend and I pulled the rear shock from his XR200 when we were 15 and put in a pair of steel plates connecting the upper and lower shock mounts. Didn't seem to affect the handling in a negative manner on the road, but it was different. lol
