Title: Rear brake light out, but works for rear
Post by: mindraider on March 11, 2012, 05:05:30 PM
I noticed today that my front brake does not activate the rear brake light, however the rear one does. Anyone know what I would have to do to fix this?

Level of difficulty?

Thanks.

Check your connections under your lever and make sure they are on, clean them out with some contact cleaner.

mmm ... multimeter or test light .. workshop manual open to relevant wiring diagram ... start at the switch ... ummm... potential difficulty "as long as a piece of string"..

but potential causes .. bad/failed/failing switch at brake lever point , bad/failed/failing plug connection in the harness somewhere, bad failed/failing wiring due to corrosion somewhere ... and what mongoose said eh!

i've only traced 2 faults so far.. which i got help from here .. but best advice is manual with wiring diagram ..

its not so much difficult as "needs patience and a correct testing sequence" kinda thing .. I spent 5 days swearing and asking for tips and help .. got great tips and help here.. but with the wiring diagram (which even my non electrical brain could follow) it was noted, found and repaired within 1 hour  8)

I'm having the same problem right now, need to get it fixed in 2-3 weeks for registration.. buying a new switch in 2 days... got a link to the wiring diagram online by any chance.. or is it in manual or..?

I'v had a low side on that side of the bike as well, which I think might have done it... :S

Happened to me. I ended up taking apart the switch and sanding down the metal contacts and it worked again. If that doesn't work, here is the switch. Not sure if its more/less expensive then bikebandit.com or anything. Just figured I would link it.

Thanks for the link Legnd!  It's $10 at Ron Ayers, and discontinued.
