Title: "breathy" sound at WOT above 5k?
Post by: Phil B on March 16, 2012, 04:24:18 PM
Disclaimer:  I'm more of a singer, than a gear-head. I have had some formal voice training. So my ear is tuned to vocal adjectives, rather than gear-head ones :-}

I've noticed that, when I have happy occasion to let-er-rip on a long straightaway, my bike sounds "normal"... up until about 5k.
After that, in addition to the normal higher pitch of the revs, there's this subtle extra sound, that my vocal teacher would describe as "breathy".  Like someone is leaking extra air out, when they sing a note, instead of it just being pure sound.

My bike still accelerates well, to my newbie perception.  I was just curious as to whether,
a) my ears are actually detecting something, or whether its just a normal sound
b) if it is being "breathy" in some manner or other, what it would be likely to be, and what a possible fix would be.

Unfortunately, I dont have any kind of bike phone mount, or I'd be tempted to run my iphone to record it, to see if you gents can make any informed comments on the sound.

My vote: induction noise from the carbs. Normal.

+1 Do you have the stock airbox or aftermarket. The k&N will be louder.

Hmph. I feel silly.

Two pieces of info.

1. I apparently have a drop-in replacement K&N filter

2. I'm an idiot, I think the sound is actually some vibration off the front, that somehow happens to match the rough frequency of the cylinder revs.

(or, contrariwise, I'm twice an idiot, and its vibration from the cyls themselves.  lol? :)
