Title: New Guy and a Bonus Question!
Post by: 00sanchez on March 16, 2012, 05:04:18 PM
Like the other new guy that just recently posted, I'm Carl (the other one spells his name funny). 31 with 3 kids, so he's go me there. Anyway, I recently bought a 98 gs500e instead of the 919 (large price difference was the kicker). I had some issues with it already, but I think most of them got sorted out. Carbs can be annoying. I used to drive an old KZ550, but I sold it years ago.

Here is the bike:

Can anyone tell me what exhaust that is? I know the bike has a drop-in K&N and was rejetted, but I plan on getting a K&N lunchbox (mainly for ease of removing the carbs and other things. That stock housing is annoying to take out and put back in). So, in order to jet right, I have to figure out what exhaust that is. Any help would be appreciated.

Anyway, look forward to my noobiness in the future as I stubbornly work on my own machines regardless of whether or not I have experience. I'm bound to mess something up and bother you with loads of questions.

Welcome.  Almost looks like a HD Sportster exhaust can.

:( I was hoping it would be a somehow popular one that people would know which jets to get. Anyone else want to take a stab at the mystery pipe?

Considering this is what HD Sportster pipes look like, I +1 the others too

If you can see all the way through, call it a slip-on. At any rate, some tweaking will probably be necessary based on plug readings and drivabilty.

You guys are awesome.  Yeah, the guy said it was a slip-on when I bought it, but I haven't been able to get ahold of him ever since I told him he had messed up the fuel line routing and I had to fix it. His reply was "everything was done at the shop and you don't need to know what size jets or what performance mods I did. I rode it all last year and it was fine." After that, I've been left grasping at straws trying to figure out what he (or supposedly the shop) messed up. Apparently he thought riding it on reserve only (because ON wouldn't work) was a sign of a perfectly working bike.

Anyway, thanks again, guys. So what jets should I get if I plan on putting a K&N lunchbox in it (it has a drop-in now) with that exhaust? I've looked at the charts here, and that exhaust isn't on there. Should I just call it a performance exhaust and get a 40 pilot and 150 main?

It also has blue LED underglow... which I've read around here is probably illegal. I'm pretty bummed about that as I figured it would help with night visibility (it being an almost completely black bike :()
