Title: Steering stem nut question
Post by: jacob_ns on March 19, 2012, 12:12:46 PM
The shop manual shows this nut placed as in the first photo but if placed this way, will not allow the steering stem lock to engage as the lower triple is placed too high. If I flip the nut over the bushing part of the nut seems to fit perfectly into the hole in the bearing cover and gives me clearance for the lock but it's not what the manual fiche shows.

I know manuals aren't infallible but this seems a little more incorrect than a spelling error. Any insight?

It was last December and I couldn't tell you. I generally trust the manuals.

On second inspection of the book though, it looks like it *might* show it placed the way I think is correct (second photo) but a combination of the low res drawing in the book and my ever degrading eyesight makes it hard to tell.

Bikes I've taken apart have it the way in the bottom photo. The ridge on it sits in the dust cap to keep that cap in place.

I do not think the manual shows the nut as in the first photo. All I see are drawings - no real photos. All drawings show a small ridge and you might think it is the tall ridge. Note that the other side has a shallow ridge. That could be what you see in the drawings and think it is the other side.

Bingo, I think I'm doing what you suggested; misinterpreting the drawing.

Thank you sir.

ALWAYS go by the manual (http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb442/adidasguy/Videos/laugh.gif)

Here's a page from the 1990 GS500E Suzuki manual. Notice anything?

I would like a set of those handlebars!
