Title: Looking for input on an idea...
Post by: mattnes17 on March 21, 2012, 11:03:44 PM
I check the forums quite often and one thread i particularly like is cbrfxr67's project thread just because its so original.
So today while browsing craigslist i stumbled upon a gsf400. I had no idea what is was so i did a little research and fell in love with the bike. 13k red line?! What is there not to love?! haha. So the bike on craigslist doesnt have a title... (some of you may see where im going with this) Would it be a 400 cc frankenstein GS be a total sin? Big waste of time? eh? Any input/thoughts/info ect wanted.

I would have posted this in the main section as it is GS related and more people would be able to help. Maybe a mod can move it for you?

A Bandit 400 motor in a GS frame?  Not a total sin.  Big waste of time? Yes, in my opinion.  I don't think it would be a trivial task, probably similar to cbrfxr's project.  But if it floats your boat, do it.  (and post pics!)

Was your bike working ok, and all of a sudden this started?

It sounds a bit like a vacuum leak. A pretty common thing to happen, it seems. I had the exact same problem you're describing, and it took me the better part of 6 months to fix it (consider that I'm no mechanic, though). In my case, it came down to a combination of rust in the tank, and having the wrong size vacuum o-rings at the top of the carbs. Another thing you might want to look at is your carb sliders, to make sure they're not getting stuck (open).

Good luck

I love this stuff, so for me it isn't a waste of time, whether it works or not.  I'd rather fail on my weld-a-tank homebrew than sit and watch tv anyday.  But that's just me.  It's a challenge to make it work, figure it out, do something YOU did yourself and then actually get to RIDE it around too?!  What's not to love about that?
I think it sounds great.  Especially if you can get it cheap enough.  Karma +1 just for thinking about doing it!
