Title: Vaporized gas shooting out drain hose!?
Post by: bombshelter13 on March 22, 2012, 03:55:56 PM
Today when I got home from a ride, I noticed a stream of what looks like vaporized gasoline trickling out of what I believe to be either the carburetor overflow or tank breather hose (it was the largest non-capped drain hose in the cluster of drain hoses at the right side) - I could just see it as a slight wavy pattern in the air, flowing out of the hose.

I seem to have stopped it for now - I put the bike up on the centre stand and left the tank filler cap open, which seems to have stopped the spray of vaporized gasoline.

Anyone have any ideas what could cause this?

POSSIBLY RELATED: A couple of times over the past few months, I've had the carbs overflow, but in those cases, liquid gas would come out of the airbox drain hose, not vaporized gas from this other hose. In those cases I was able to temporarily rectify the situation and stop the flow of liquid gas by turning off the tank-mounted petcock and draining the bowls.

I already have a few things I know I need to do this weekend:

- Change oil/filter (scheduled maintenance).
- Adjust carb air screw position (were not set right by mechanic that installed my Buddha jets).
- Check/probably adjust float height (to hopefully correct the occasional overflows that caused the liquid spills mentioned above).

So... what should I add to the list to solve this vaporized gas spray problem?

just the tank venting, when your riding gas is sloshing around, which will cause the tank to pressurize a little. Its just doing it's job of releasing the pressure. If it wasn't your carbs would flood while riding around, the pressure would over power the needle and seat.

The only vent on a tank is a tiny breather hole in the gas cap. The drain hole around the gas cap is to drain spilled gas when filling up and rain that gets in there around the cap. The cap is sealed except for the tiny air hole.

If you have a California tank, there is another breather in the tank that connects to an elbow tube under the right side of the tank. This goes to emissions stuff that could have been removed IF it is a CALIFORNIA tank. All other tanks only have the gas cap drain hose.

Wiggle the hose and tell us what it leads back to.

I can think of 3 hoses normally there: Gas tank cap drain; battery vent; and the largest is the air box drain.

What year bike and is it a California model?

You think its blow by ... how is the compression and power ...
Oh, is the air box filled up with gas ? then yea drain that ... however if its a liquid, it will drip out, wont vaporize.
Cool.
