Hello, I just put on a set of bars,top triple, foot pegs, and hand grips on. the bike started before i did the work. new battery just put it in. the lights come on and the blinkers work, brake light works. now after a week the bike will not start, it won't click like it does when the battery is low or dying, its does not turn over at all, when i turn the key on the headlights come on and the gauge light also but when i hit the start button it will not do anything. i took the start button off and looked at it and nothing seems to be loose or broken. is there anything else that will couse it not to start?
No click of start relay?
1. Clutch safety switch
2. Size stand switch
3. Neutral switch
4. Connector from the right hand controls.
5. Connector to clutch switch from left hand controls
Side stand down and not in neutral kills the bike. Starter relay will not click.
Starter will not click if clutch switch not engaged. You can try shorting it. LOTS of people break the clutch switch because you can't remove the lever unless you take out the switch. Try to and you destroy the switch.
Is the neutral light on? If so, neutral switch is OK.
Will it start if you short the contacts on the starter relay?
Put on center stand. In neutral. Side stand up. Now safe to check things and short the starter relay contacts.

You just put on new bars? Check and double check the clutch switch is hooked up correctly. Wires not reversed? Making good contact?
There is no polarity on the clutch switch - just a dry contact.
Neutral has only 1 wire. Newer bikes have 3 but the other 2 go to the ignition to sense 1st and 2nd gears for timing.
Side stand switch is 2 wires plugged in under the seat. Doubt it is that since you didn't go there. Same with neutral switch.
Most likely in order of probability:
1. Broken clutch switch (shirt wires if it is until you replace it)
2. Disconnected clutch switch
3. Left hand controls connector. Does high/low beam work? If so, that's probably OK.
4. Right hand control connector.
5. Kill switch? Is it in the ON position? (Yes, people have forgotten about that)

It's in neutral, light is on and rear tires spins, kick stand is up, bike is on center stand. Conector to right hand control? is that the brake light switch? if thats what adidasguy is talking about that works also. i think it might be the clutch switch, do you still need to clutch switch if it's in neutral?
Not sure what year you have but my '07 won't start unless the clutch is pulled in (hence, clutch switch contacts closed) even when in neutral. Check that little clutch switch by the clutch.
I have an 89, when i took the clutch switch off to change the handle bars, it was corroded so i wiped if off and put it back in, when i get done with work i will have to put some di-electric grease on it and see if that helps the contacts otherwise i will have to get another one. Is there and way to jump the switch to see if that is the problem? I'm guessing thats it because that was one of the few electric things that i took off with the bars, the only other thing is the kill switch.
Simply short the wires or wrap the contact PC board with wire or foil. Its only a safety switch for starting. Can be permanently shorted with no effect.
That little wiper that falls out has spring & other stuff and has to be in correctly. A real pain. You probably lost something or put it in wrong. Been there - studied it. Even did a video on it.
Suggest you get the newer switch - it will fit as the perch is the same. Then clip the wires off of the PC board contact thing and crimp on 2 spade lugs to the wires for the newer switch.
so plan on the new switch and for now, clip the wires at the PC board and twist them together.
Well the sun shines on a dogs ass every once and awhile. I actually found the little plastic piece that goes in the clutch switch and put it in and holly shaZam! it works.

Just and fyi...For testing and diagnosing I found that a spade fuse works well for jumping out the clutch handle switch.
Fuse only works on 1997+ bikes. The older ones have a PC board with contacts. 1997+ it changed to a different switch and had spade lugs that can fit on a fuse. paperclips work well. A scrap of tin foil works, too. There is almost no current through that switch so most anything that conducts electricity would work.
