Title: To sell or not to sell???
Post by: Tombstones81 on March 28, 2012, 05:46:27 PM
Alright, the offer of around $2000 for my bike still stands.

He knows how much work and money I've put into the bike as well.
Also knows the problems with the old engine.

I would basically be tossing everything for the GS I have with him.

Seriously thinking this over tonight....
as for that price, I can def save up a little more and get an SV650.

and if you dont know of why I have to think about it.
see this http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=58225.0

Put a TON of work and money into it and keep hitting a brick wall.....

My opinion will probably be in the minority but I say cut your losses and sell.  You have already put forth more effort than I ever would have, sell it and buy something that runs so you can enjoy riding for a change.

I am right in that ballpark.
already Too much work and I just want to ride!
I might be hurting after for selling it...
but if I get my butt a pristine SV650, the shiny new toy will make that ALL go away  :thumb:

Agreed with Jessie. You have an epic story to tell all. Do not look at it as a loss, but a learning experience. Sell and get an SV. You deserve it!  I'm sure the experience has taught you a lot about wrenching (more good than bad). Had an 82 GS 450 L that was a freaking money pit and frustration nightmare. I posted on Craigslist, and in 36 hours I had full price cash in hand. Never looked back.

Good luck with your decision.

yep.
all up to if he stands by his offer.

as im either going to be able to purchase another bike as early as next Friday, but not be hasty. (meaning, enough to buy another bike)
or
if it falls through, keep on workin on the thing.

sent him a text tonight but he was probably sleeping.
Will find out tomorrow most likely.

I would just sell, take the money and put it on a bike that you can ride home. Just make sure you get one that runs good so your not at the same place with a different bike.  ;)

Personally, I couldn't give up on a project like that knowing I didn't see it to the end. However, $2k is more than that bike is worth so take the money and run!

you should expect some problems with a 20 year old motorcycle, with several previous owners, and having swapped engines. it's a learning process. not always fun, but still learning.

i'd fix the broken oil studs, get some intake boots, and ride it.

get your feet wet (riding) on the gs. get used to doing your own maintenance, -then- update to an sv/whatever after a year or so.

2 cents

I voted to keep it before I even read the post.  But if somebody offered me 2 grand for my running cbr I'd sell it though, so a not running pain in the a** that I used to learn on, would definitely be sold.
