Title: Blue demon
Post by: oz353 on March 29, 2012, 12:48:43 PM
This will be an ongoing thread about my 92 gs500 (blue demon).
So far I have already removed the headlight fairing and belly pan. Also I have changed the handlebars from the standard style to clipons from my 89.
before:

after:
Yesterday, I made room in my basement for the blue demon and proceeded to remove both wheels.
Then I removed the rotors from the two front wheels I have. I did that because I found an imperfection on the blue demons wheel. So I will have a shop take my best wheels put new tires and wheel bearings in them and use the others on the parts bike for ease of mobility. The 89 I have has the sexy rear shock knuckle. Im considering   switching those while I wait for the tires.
Ill post more info and pics when I get home.

i installed my new progrip 717's
Before: ready for install
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g422/oz353/DSCN0489.jpg)
installed:

while the wheels are off, i decided to try and see if the exhaust bolts would come out. (two snapped off on my other project)
hurray they did!
some of them were stubborn coming out so i used this...
to restore the threads in the cylinder head. i will use fresh new bolts to reinstall the exhaust after cleaning it. (the very same as in the picture.) it took alot of patience and pb blaster to get those exhaust bolts out. turn a few degrees back a degree, turn a few degrees back a degree, pb blaster, repeat.
(had the front wheel loosely on so i could lower the floor jack to remove the exhaust.)

im planning to get reloads fork brace. i cleaned all the wheels yesterday. ready for new tires and wheel bearings. will have the shop re install the rotor before balancing the front wheel. gotta have the shop use my best front wheel which is off the 89. the best rotor was on the 92. the wheel from the 92 has a slight dent on the left side. the lip is bent flat and away from center. not alot, but enough to concern me. ill have them check it and if its useable ill put it on the 89.

anybody have objections to using a touch of super glue on the little foam pads between the fender and the forks? i have just filled and charged a brand new wallymart battery. the es12bs, a sealed no spill AGM style battery. will use the one in the 92 on the 89. specificly to test the engine after completeing its rebuild. still have to put the generator magnet bowl on then seal that side up.
things left to do...
1. turn signal bulbs for some aftermarket rears. hard to find a small 12v 23w bulb.
2. swap shock knuckles. i want that aluminum knuckle!
3. have tires and wheel bearings installed.
4. front brake pads.
5. change the fork oil
6. Insure it.
7. register it
8. inspect it

Only knew it would when cranking it by hand went soooo smoothly compared to the previous cam shafts.

Well, if she stays 100%
I will be seeing Oz most likely the 2nd or 3rd weekend in May when I ride the bike out to Pitt to visit my brother again.

and whoever else nearby.

Hopefully ya get everything together by then Oz!  :thumb:

hmmm
that suckers lookin quite nice and shiny!

just curious, would a high temp clear coat keep it lookin that way?

Title: Re: Blue demon
Post by: oz353 on April 04, 2012, 07:35:13 PM
i think it would. but if i were to do that it would have to be perfect. that would be alooooot more grinding.
i used what you can see under the exhaust in the prep picture. and some smaller discs in the tighter areas.
there are some reallly deeep pock marks. and just clearing over that would look uncool.
i ground off as much of the roughness as i could in hopes of having to use fewer coats of paint.

Post by: Tombstones81 on April 05, 2012, 06:04:47 AM
dunno man, if I had power tools to make it look THAT good...
I would just finish it and leave it all nice and shiny and finish it with a clear.

but thats just me.

got everything buttoned up, picked up my tires this morning along with new spark plugs and some VHT flat black paint for the exhaust. i didnt repaint yet though, i didnt want to take the time for it to cure first. so i started re assembly then had to go move furniture for my PT job. came home got back to work, got everything torqued down to proper specs then took a nice hour long test ride. my first ever ride on my own motorcycle on public roads. it was so wonderful, even with the chill tonight. 46 deg. F.
i think my gloves are a tad to tight and perhaps some long johns on the next ride. lol brrr. i did wear my leather jacket gloves and my helmet. :thumb:
ill post some pics in the morning.

(edit) eh, short video instead of pics

well I guess you actually did beat me to finishing yours.

Since mine didnt Stay 100% for very long. hahaha

But, headed to NJ tomorrow morning after work to pick up that 01 engine with 6K on it only, that had a video of it running and sounding 100%!

So hopefully I will be all ready to go come May!

Already put my time off request for the 17th and 18th of May as im off the 19th 20th and 21st.
I plan to sleep through the night of Thursday the 17th and leave first thing Friday morning.
Had to request the 17th as I work graveyard and I cant ride out there friday morning after working all night.

I plan to pinch my pennies next pay and then I get paid on the 18th that im headed out, so I will have some money to go with me.

If its nice out, plan to have a cookout at my brothers with his family, most likely on Saturday. (my treat)
So if we ride Saturday as well, i'll see if you and whoever else rides is welcome to come over for eats!

thats as long as lady luck sticks by me! hahaha

i'll keep ya posted!

I had to remove the center stand  Oh well, it sounds mean as hell now. More befitting of its name. (Blue Demon)  I haven't rejetted yet  So i will most likely revert it to stock while i finish it up. I have to grind the welds down re-weld if needed and re-grind then paint.
Cant decide if I want to paint entirely black or just up to the beginning taper of the muffler.

Quick "paint" job.

Nice!!

but what happened to that nice shiny exhaust???
leave it out in the rain?

also, not 100% sure yet how its looking on riding out there next Friday for the weekend now.

atm, on the hunt for employment as of yesterday......

not sure if I will get benefits either.

(edit)

cant make it out to Pitt for at least the rest of this month now. ><

called my brother and let em know I might not make it.
told me to wait until after this month tho as he has to work every weekend now to make up a week he had to take off.
so he pretty much wont Ever be home for the month.

Update:  I have finally recieved all my parts for the rejet and exhaust. And on saturday they were installed.
I did a quick carb clean, rejet, K&N lunchbox, and installed my custom exhaust.
Ended up with a throttle cable issue, reving when turning handlebars.
I had disconnected the cable from the controls so as not to disturb its already perfect adjustment.
Turns out the cable jacket was twisted after reinstalling everything. A couple twists and all was well.
Then I had an issue of bogging with partial throttle from idle. Installed second set of washers on the needles, no more bogging.
Test riding produced impossibly wide smiles and lots of woohooo's.
There is alot of popping on decel so I started looking for a problem. Found both carb boots leaking on the engine side.
I still have gaskets from the kit I bought to rebuild the 89's engine. So I will try replacing those seals first and if no joy I shall be in need of some good condition carb boots.
I had also ordered a ss screw kit. I had thought it was just for the carbs... Nope. It is for the carbs and engine! Bonus!
Ill post some pics once I get around to transfering them to my computer.
