I traded my shotgun and minibike for this GS500 last fall (prob $600 worth of stuff). With the help of all the wonderful people on this forum I was able to take this pile of crap and transform it into something.

Wow, that paint looks similar, is it the same? I used Hot Hues by DuPont. the color is Polaris Red.
mine was all rattle can, the primer, color and clear.
Duplicolor white primer.
Duplicolor Retro Red Metal Specks color.
and 2 Part (2K), SprayMax Urethane Aerosol Clear Coat
How hard is it to paint the rear fairing? Thinking of rattle canning mine but I'm not sure how to strip down plastic.

One option I read was Brake fluid.
sadly, that didnt even Touch the old paint on mine.
so I did it the old fashioned way.
Sand that sucker by hand.
but u wanna get whats underneath (color) as even as possible and enough primer to mask any color that might seep through visually.
the first time I did mine, there was some Bad black streaks in it from not sanding it down enough (was TOO many different colors on mine)
redid it and it came out better, but if you look closely, u can still see some Light black streaks.
My bike was rattle canned flat black by the previous owner because it was purple. I just sanded it down and sprayed on some heavy fill primer, then re-sanded and sprayed.
man, i'm liking these metallic red bikes. purdy !
can i get critical for a minute.... if you -really- like the chain guard, ignore this.... but if you're undecided, paint the chain guard black !
otherwise, i dig it. it's just there's a point when there is too much color match on parts. :thumb:

yeah thats what I should have used instead of regular primer.
would have came out 10XX better up close.
the filler primer.
(edit)
and I think the only problem with that chain guard painted red, is its rather Large in comparison to the custom GS500 one.
if you are not talking about mine that is.
I like them both tho
(edit again)
oh yeah.
More pics! haha
Really diggin that bike man!
need some more different views!
I'm not sure sure I like the chain guard either, I figured it would be easy enough to change to flat black if the red was too much. I may change it yet.
That is so friggin sweet. Its that or Im drunk......mmmm...maybe bothr
Cheers.
Bike looks great! One little nitpick though, I think you should paint your rear sets/heel guard black so it doesn't stand out. Also to both you and tombstone, the red chain guards may be a little too much. But overall I love both of your bikes!
Nice work.
I agree on the heel guards - paint them black.
You need to get a stainless steel chain guard and paint it red. That would look better than the OEM plastic one.

I think he has the stainless guard on his bike. You can see the design cut into it.
red chain rocks.. really ties it together and stands out at the same time..
