I was browsing CL and the title and price of this post caught my attention. I was curious to see what the hell kind of customization almost triples the value of a 3-4K dealer priced bike.
Sharing it just for laughs. This guy/girl/? must be smokin something good.

Hey hey guys. Be nice. You're not being fair. She probably put a lot of time into this design, and just think of all the dignity that went out the window once it was completed.
Ah crap....I was sucked in too. PINK!!!! AHHHH!!!!

She told me $18,000 has goin into the bike. I asked: where?
I fail to see what the fuss is all about? :dunno_black:
While it may not be everbodies taste it is a custom paint job that looks pretty damn good in my book. Over priced maybe but it is a bike a lot of chicks would want. And compared to some of the rattle can abomination paint jobs I have seen by members on this site this girls bike sh1ts all over them. Also Gsat remember there is a thing called karma dude. I hope it finds you one day.

my specialty hahaha ;)
Airbrushed paint like that is stooooopid expensive ~ a particularly good way to lose a schwack of cash on an 'investment' in an otherwise stock motorcycle.
I don't think it's a bad thing to tell other people where they have gone wrong ~ how else are they going to learn ?
I particularly like the extensive list of expensive aftermarket parts :thumb:
Or, as a friend of mine said, "Do what most r1 owners do, go on ebay and buy every anodized piece of shaZam! that costs under 100 bucks, then when you go to sell it list every piece you stuck to it and say 'thousands invested'."

I was trying to help the poor girl out. She called me, I apologized for being a smart ass, then I let her know that no one was going to pay that much for a gs500. I never said it was ugly or anything, I was just pointing out to her how over priced that bike was, and that if she was asking that much, then it is clearly worth more to her than anyone else and probably shouldn't sell it. I live my life by karma, but that doesn't mean I can't have a little fun and play harmless pranks.

Bike is ment to be ridden, not gawked at... if the rattle can keeps it from rusting, it is doing its job
I am disappoint. I saw 5 time show winner and thought it would be an awesome completely custom bike. It's just a stock GS with a slipon and custom paint.
I guess I will have to go look at seamax's bikes if I want to see some neat custom work.
If that bike is $9200, do you think I can ask $16000 for Junior? (Not that I'd sell him...)

Only if Junior has won 8.7 first place trophies. :dunno_black:
I wouldn't ride it, but the paint looks good just not my style, the $9,000 price is nuts. I might have some airbrush work do on my bike in the future, but i will get it at cost, and i just want the Suzuki emblem on the tank done and thats about it.
A friend of mine had a similar amount of artwork airbrushed on his Buell 1125R ~ cost him $10,000 :nono:
If she has all that kind of money to dump on a GS500, what the hell does she even need to sell it for? She can afford to give the thing away if that's the case.
No matter how nice it looks, no matter how much you spent...it doesn't matter. It isn't an investment - it doesn't add value to the bike. In fact, in many ways, it detracts. People like stock bikes - people don't want a bike that feels like it belongs to someone else. It's like buying a house that has other peoples' pictures in it and you can't throw them away....

true for the most part.
there are still some people out there who fall in love with other peoples work.
but not $10K worth!!! :nono:
like the guy who only seen my FB photos of my bike and instantly fell in love with it and offered $2000 right off the bat, even after the gf told him whats wrong with it.
(he had to put the $$ towards his cars engine before anyone goes OT and asks why I didnt sell)
as I was going to sell. lol

How can you speak for everybody? It is just a paint job. It is not hard to add your own mods to a bike to make it feel like your own.

it's common knowledge, for bikes, cars, houses, etc
this is why when an item is prepped for sale all the personal touches are suggested to be removed and just a good cleaning/shining for whatever the object of desire is.
one of the problems with a custom painted bike is .... having to repaint, rattle bomb, or fix things if someone is a perfectionist.
so many times i've seen 'custom painted' bikes that are lacking terribly in the actual mechanics involved with a safe two wheeler. things get neglected for the sake of a new flashy doo-hickey, some airbrush work, an anodized that, etc
that gs is in the neighborhood of $2000, but more like $1700-1900, assuming the drivetrain is intact.
I think the quality of the paint job looks great. I could see the owner paying a pretty penny for it. Personally, I'm not a fan of the theme so I wouldn't pay $1K much less $10K for the bike. Maybe William Bruce Bailey would be interested.

Guy at work rides a Triumph Thunderbird...
... said to me it was the Most comfortable bike he has ever ridden. He forgot that he'd changed the forks, changed the handlebars, changed the seat. ANYWAY... he inquired about getting the painted bits painted a different color. The first quote was $10k. We are not talking about custom airbrush work but a straight color all the way around. The 2nd quote he got was $5k to $6k. Just for the two guards, tank and couple small side covers. WTF.

Paint quite can depend on whether you take the parts off the bike or they take them off.
Like tires: my dealer installs tires on the rims free if they are off the bike because they don't have to disassemble anything. The charge a small fee if they have to remove and reinstall the wheels on the bike.
Nice.. Unique, and that's what matters most IMO..

No amount of disassemble time gets you to $5K for paint on a bike though.
I've heard these figures before for bike paint... always wonder who they're asking. Heck, send the guy my way. I can lay down Glasurit in any color on his bike for $2500 ;)
While painting a bike's different than painting a car, it's no more difficult, and requires quite a bit less actual paint.
Met an agoraphobic artist that does good work cheap. He did the tank and fenders below for $250.

After reading all these posts/replies, I can't help but wonder about my own project. I have a 05 GS500F that had very bad fading on the fairing and rear cowl emblems, so I decided to repaint the bike (not yet, but very soon). It would cost about the same as buying stock stickers/emblems for the fairings and rear cowl. My plan was to paint the entire bike dark blue, with white stripes on the fairings that make a 45 degree angle with the ground, running up onto the tank possibly. I thought that this would help sell it also, since I saw that people were struggling to sell their GS500's on ebay that had stock paint jobs (I also have a few other additions such as a Shark radio, with custom mounted speakers).
So to sum up my question to everyone that reads this, do you think a simple custom paint job wouldn't "personalize" it too much, like this lady did?
Paint it if you want it to look good for you. I don't think it will do anything for your resale value.

"1990 Gs500e - $9 (Maryland)
My 1990 Gs500e, that I bought off of a dude on Craigslist about five years ago has been nothing but awesome. I'll never need another bike. "
From http://baltimore.craigslist.org/mcy/3052342940.html (http://baltimore.craigslist.org/mcy/3052342940.html)
Craigslist! How you confuse me! This guy is...
-selling his GS for $9, $900, $9000?
-not selling his GS?
-thinks his GS is awesome?
-never wants another bike because this one has traumatized him and a $9 tag will get rid of it fast?
-never needs a bike because he will always keep this one?
-bought his GS for $9 and is bragging (if so, you must be a member of this board)?
