Title: Slightly too much oil...
Post by: Pelikan on April 03, 2012, 03:17:55 PM
Just changed the oil added slightly too much is there any easy way to drain outa small amount w/ opening the drain bolt?  A small rubber tube maybe pushed down into the filler hole?

how much is too much? I don't know if there is much of a need to obsess over a couple of ounces.   :dunno_black:

How much did you add? Are going by level on the dipstick? Try taking it for a ride first and then re-checking, if that's the case. I'd worry about 500mL too much...but 1-150mL I really wouldn't sweat over.

I change the oil filter every other oil change and put 3 quarts in every time.  With a filter change the oil is about at the full mark and w/o a filter change the oil is over full up to the top of the flat on the dipstick.  Haven't had any problem with that so far in 170k miles.

If that's the case I think I might be good.  I replaced the filter too and it's reading just over the F.  Haven't ridden yet.

I prefer mine Just under the F. This way I Know I will Not have increased pressures from too much oil.

Overfilling oil can be worse then under filling. If it gets to the level where the crank needs to dip into the oil level in the engine case.  imagine the amount of pressure when the crank has to slap through this viscose layer at 6 to 8 grand. It can really wreak havoc on the lower end.  Just smack your hand against water at over 100 miles per hour you get the picture.

Manaenrc: That takes a lot more than 100-150ml.
Pelikan: if its @ F after you changed the filter, your level will drop a wee bit when you start it, and stop it. Cos your filter will fill up with oil. That takes up a bit of oil.

Cool.

Agreed... I just wanted to point out that more is not better in this this case, not that people think it's a good idea to add extra oil.

More is better! Just ask the stunters that use extra oil to keep the SV650 from starving during a wheelie!   :cookoo:

lol...   You would think the manufacturers would have learned their lesson by now. Honda learned that years ago in their early hawks and cb's. If you give a guy power he's going to use it. So put the oil pickup toward the rear, or use a dry sump. I guess it just surprises me that such a modern engine would still have that issue.
