ok here is the deal my local dealer has a gs that the owner never paid the bill on and he abandoned the bike at the dealership (this was at least 3 years ago). and he said i could buy the whole thing from him for like $450 but he won't sell me the frame. which i kinda umm need. so the question is can i title an abandoned bike? just seeing if anyone knows before i go to the DMV.
Well your firend could do a mechanics lien to get the title... What year is the bike?Is it in really nice shape/running?
Where are you located?
YES in some states you can file for an abandoned vehicle title....
In Maryland..(I'm about to do it with an old boat) you have to fill out some forms to get the last info on the previous owner/registraton (Fee). Then you send a registered letter to that person at the adress they provide.. You also run an add in th paper describing the vehicle in detail and the location it was abandoned at....
If you get no reply to either in 30 days you get the paperwork to get the title -after you show them the returned registered letter.......(more fees-then the registraion fee and tax)
So you get a charged a few fees and wait a couple of months....
Check with your DMV on the particulars.....but unless the bike was abandoned on your property they'll tell you that your
dealership has to file for it.....(find out what the "abandoned" condition requires...never volunteer toooo much info first with the DMV..)
What year is the bike/mileage/condition ?
Ask the dealer to place a mechanic's lien against the bike and sell it to you. Tell him it's not too hard to do.
A Dealer should know how to do a mechanic's lien. It should be pretty easy for them to do. A hell of a lot easier than John Q Public to.
If he won't/hasn't done it, that should be a red flag. That frames VIN might be hot and he is trying to get rid of it before the cops find it an take the bike away from him for nada...
Or the dealer is looking at it that it stil needs work... There's already unpaid money for work it has already had done... it has storage fees on it...So by the time he gets a lien ( they aren't free either I think) and fixes the bike for sale-he may be lucky to break even....
Well that's just my supposition...
No title= lowball him $$ wise and get a bil of sale to CYA...
its a red gs. 96 i think it has the dark grey frame guages are gone so i don't know the mileage. moter is out of the bike but he has the motor. excelent paint not a scratch or ding on it. will need new tires as it has been sitting a while. i will need to have it re-keyed i think, or i will just bypass that whole problem all together. oh and i am in reno nevada
if he still won't sell the frame i think i will be dumpster diving for a few days
as far as storage fees there shouldn't be any. the dealer has a huge lot with hundreds, maybe thousands of bikes that are in a storage HANGER out back.
i used to work there thats how i found it, but the owner never stopped by my cave that was receiving.
