Title: electrical issues
Post by: danielarms76 on April 07, 2012, 07:31:14 PM
HI all i have a vl250 intruder ,sry to post in gs twins but u guys r the best.I have an issue with my recharging system,if i recharge the battery the bike runs for about 40km i loose my speedo and lights and then starts surging and then dies. Then i can jump start it and it runs again for awhile before dying again, when i get home i have no battery. If i recharge the battery the bike runs sweet again. so far i have recharged the battery, done a load test was all good.Took the red lead off the battery while the bike was running bike says firing no worries so i think this means the stator is all good?,Checked the voltage coming into the battery and only getting 5.4v,so i presumed its the rectifier/regulator or the stator  ran i multi over the regulator(unpluged) and think i got a fault.from the red to Y1 and Y2 i was getting 1.54v like the workshop manual said but on red to Y3 got nothing and repeated the test from B/W to Y1 and Y2 the same as red   and same from B/W to Y3 nothing.Im pretty sure this means my regulator is stuffed, but just want to get your thoughts before i  order on Tuesday that this is the fault as the regulators are not cheap.
TNX for your help and advice.

Most likely one of 2 things:

1. Battery going bad. Though, once bike is running it should keep running therefore...
2. Voltage regulator/rectifier. You are not re-charging your battery. You're running just off of the battery and it drains as you ride.

If you check ebay, there are bike breakers that have used ones for good prices. A few of my favorites are:
Pinwall cycles
Suncoast
Dominic Profano (spelling?)
