Title: cagiva mito tail swap, challenge accepted!
Post by: thomaswilkes on April 09, 2012, 03:45:02 PM
First of all a it about myself, I'm 18 years old passed my full licence a few months ago on a cg125 then moved onto my beloved gs500. I'm an apprentice engineer with a love for two wheels and petrol!

Once I got my gs500 I wanted a unique one and decided on a tail swap so I searched on ones that had already been done live the sv650,r1,r6 etc and decided on a cagiva mito125cc rear end because it was different and I haven't seen it done anywhere other than one on the internet that looks like a bone!

I have had to blow tourch tho front of it where it tucks up near the tank and cut silly amounts of plastic away for it to fit but with alot of work and persistance and alot of people telling me I had no chance of doing it, I finally got it to fit! Front seat pan is made out of sheet mild steel ready to be covered in foam and material and rear seat pan is made out of plastic that has been moulded with a blow touch and very burn hands! The rear light is going to made out of clear plastic with LED's inserted into the plastic where they can't be seen and the plastic will be backed by a sheet of chrome so it will look like a mirror when lights are off and glow red when lights are on ( in theory) .

When I got the tail unit it was in very bad condition signs of it being dropped on the bike, 3 layers of different paint and primer that I have sanded off. Pictures to follow and hopefully it will be in the paint booth by Saturday and tomoro I am getting the foam and material for the seat and LED's for the rear light.

Sweet! Anxious to see it finished.
By the working of your post, you're not in North America. Where are you located?
I have the same candy red tank.I located a new old stock in Germany and shipped it to me in Seattle - so my 1992 has a brand new 1994 tank. I love that color.
Looks like European tall handle bar risers, Renntec engine bars, seems to be R&G bar ends. I don't recognize the passenger pegs.
Here's what I did with mine. I used the Gimbel seat and rear sets from Germany.

The WIKI has a color chart. Suzuki color is Candy Antares Red. There is a white metallic base coat, the candy red then a clear top coat.
The Suzuki color code is 19A if that helps you cross reference it. Used on Gs500's in 1994 and 1996. I don't know about other models, but probably was used on other bikes besides the GS500.

I painted my cowling and seat to match the tank with the factory paints from colorrite.com - a company here in the US that supplies motorcycle paints. Did it with rattle cans, too! They sell rattle cans, quarts and touch up pens.

Have at it! Post pictures of your progress because we LOVE pictures here on GStwins.

.....and welcome to the nut house!  :icon_lol:

The rear pegs and bar ends I made myself on the lathe due to come jealous Buddha Loves You that kicked it over first night I had it on road I had to replace the bar ends so I decided to make a set of one offs and crash bungs to match that replaced the rear pegs they look real nice when polished up!

I vote black. The red fabric would not match. It would be too much red. A black seat says "this is where my butt goes" and looks like a seat. Red seat seems like you're trying to hide something.

Junior (the name for my red 1992) has black seats. I couldn't imagine having red seat pads. it would seem so wrong.

Have you named your bike yet? most all of us name out bikes.

There is a "dirty word filter"
You may have to space things out or misspell it or toss in punctuation.
Though for some reason fucker is not filtered. Go figure? But "your m.o.m" is filtered to "I love YOU".
I can't figure out what got switched to "my mama".

wow! they are some pretty bikes!
i got it color matched and played just for it to all react over night because of the crap english weather but hey, money comes and goes the experience stays! i have sprayed it silver and trimmer the bottom in leather alont the crease in the plastic and below matching the seats. the reason i have done it silver is to match the new custom tanks that are in progress ( design and got the parts) i am using two fire extinguishers as petrol tanks with harly petrol necks i have aquired 4 empty 6LTR canisters so two are going spare and i am happy to let them go if some one fancies a simular project? hopefully they will be welded up next week end and the base place template made this week end ready to make in alloy.
pics will be later if i have time......
