Title: Rattle Can Paint For Different Surfaces... Plastic and Metal
Post by: 25knots on April 11, 2012, 05:45:24 PM
I was just wondering if anyone has experience using rattle can paint on both the tank and the plastic fairings of their GS.  Do the same paints work well on the different materials?  Or do you need to use a different "surface-specific" paint for the different material sections of your bike?

I've heard good things about Rustoleum Protective Enamel Spray, but plastic isn't a surface its recommended for (the website says its for metal, wood, concrete or masonry).  Rustoleum makes a different type of paint for plastic surfaces, but the colors aren't exactly the same... See the issue?  If I can use one paint on both types of surfaces, I don't have to play "guess whether these two different spray paint cans will look the same when I apply them."  This is a fairly common game played by DIY idiots like myself

Any helpful tips will be appreciated.

I rattle canned my dirt bike plastics once upon a time. I sanded down the coating with 120 grit sandpaper all the way down to the dull plastics, cleaned it for hours with methanol, dozens of times, then rattle canned it with rustoleum exterior barbecue grill spray paint, it worked pretty good. After romping through the woods the paint came off with the trees. I resprayed with rhino lining type paint. It lasted years! If that doesn't work, there's always duct tape!

hahaha thanks for that ^^^

Honestly, dont bother with enamel!
I read it looks Very bad if you try to clear coat it.
which I didnt know before I did my frame in black enamel and finished it off with clear.
didnt look right at all, so I redid the areas that are viewable.

All the red is Duplicolor Retro Red Metal Specks.
Below that and the black on the frame was Duplicolor White primer. (shoulda been primer filler tho ><)
The black is Duplicolor Black Enamel.

and finished it off with probably The best clearcoat u can buy in a rattle can.
http://www.repaintsupply.com/pd_2_part_2k_aerosol.cfm
^^ cheapest site to get it from.

and no I did not paint the chain! hahaha
I bought it that way.

if I ever repaint another frame and dont go with powdercoating.
Im def going to use a non enamel and the clear I listed above.

1. it looks Alot better.
and
2. the clear wont eat away from spills of gas like the enamel will.

Good info guys.  Toombstone... I just sent you a pm which you can ignore as this tells me what I needed to know.  How old is the paint job?... has the paint held up?

Do you wipe the rims with WD-40 or Kerosene? If so does the paint wipe off any?

I finished the paint job in December.
But then I ran into almost Endless engine problems.

Since then its been nothin but work work work on that dang thing until recently.

I actually havnt even been able to be finished to the point where I can wash the entire bike to an eat off it clean and finish it up with a wax job for the first time.

Finally got One of 2 engines working recently, and put about 150 miles on it so far.

Now I am just tinkering with minor leftover things like a slight leaking head cover that got worse on Monday when I pushed the bike a little hard riding with some locals. (now fixed)

So I dont have many miles or much time on the road with it.

and the clear coat I linked will hold up to chemicals like gas, kerosene, WD40 etc etc
that was the main initial reason I bought it when it was referred to me by adidas.
but now after using another general clear coat on my headlight cowl (duplicolor) and having it turn out lookin like Garbage!
it showed me that clear is in a whole nother league then crap u can buy at an auto parts store.

I actually already have all the paint to redo the headlight cowl.
well, the primer and color (same red)
the clear will be arriving today and I will be picking it up tomorrow when I go for a ride. (accidentally went to my old address)

So as long as I remember, I'll be taking some before, during, and after pics to show ya how it comes out if you want to go the rattle can route.

which will be starting either today or tomorrow as its going to be nice and warm out all weekend.

Wanna get it primered and colored by tomorrow for sure tho, so I can toss the clear on it on Sunday.

and I deleted all my bookmarked sites with write ups on how to properly rattle can paint motorcycle parts.
so before you even start buying paint.
just go and read any and everything you can find on it (I did)

and some more advice.
Buy a "Primer Filler" for at Least the metal parts. (and for the plastics if they have any scratches)
I didnt and up close, u can see the small imperfections in the tank. (if you actually Look for them)
if I used Primer Filler, it would have turned out wayyyy better up close.

(edit)
heres how easy it is as long as you do it properly.

Light even coats in a straight line.
I start out side to side and then go up and down to even it out incase theres any unseen lines of lighter or darker spots.

Its all about prep and patience.
theres no need to get it looking Great on the very first coat, or even the next few.
as long as it ends Good.

recent reply to my thread with some pics painting my headlight cowl. (only finished with the primer and color)

actually i cant paint those if i wanted to or the slip on.   as the new motor im getting is silver and im not in the mood to tinker with that in even the slightest way.  but enough of bein OT about my bike. haha dude wants some more info on painting.  and sry at work on my phone. so this will look like one long sentence...

(edit)
Yeah still OT a bit.
but yeah, not sure how thats going to look now with a silver engine in it.

I honestly dont care.
because I wont have the money for GOOD paint when I have the motor and by the time I would, it will be all set in the bike.

So at least the slip-on and forks will match.

kk since the bike isnt going to be ridden until I got the new motor in it.
I'll take some of my spare time today to track down the sites I had bookmarked on how to properly rattle can paint and post em up for ya 25.

(edit)
clear coat finished!
my project thread updated with some pics for ya.
and pics of the paint I've used.
