Title: Ignition advancing
Post by: gsatterw on April 16, 2012, 05:54:58 PM
So I've suddenly become interested in advancing my ignition on my 02. Here's the question: The stock advancement is set to 5* on the 02's and 12* on all other models. Most people advance from 12* to 17*. Should I only do +5*, bringing it up to 10*, or should i do +12*, bringing it up to 17* like most models???

confused.

according to the wiki, all 2001 and 2002 bikes had the California-style 5-degree ignition signal rotor. You could probably swap this for a 12 degree rotor off another bike as I'm not aware of any other mechanical difference in the ignition system, and the cam/valve timing is certainly the same. Others feel free to chip in here if I'm wrong. So you have the choice of going from 5 to 12 by swapping the rotor, or from 5 to 10ish by doing the DIY mod from the wiki and keeping your current rotor. Actually, I suppose you can use the DIY mod to achieve any reasonable amount advance.

Alternately, you could contact forum member Bob Broussard http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?action=profile;u=21 (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?action=profile;u=21) who has been known very kindly to mod the rotors of forum members!
