Title: Short levers, where from!?
Post by: mysterious_rider on April 17, 2012, 03:48:57 AM
Hi guys I'm trying to find levers to fit my gs500. They HAVE to be short ones for the MOT or they will hit my bar mirrors (quite short clipons)

Any ideas what ones fit?

Quite like these.

cheers

ASV make good quality levers in the shorty versions. You will need to change your clutch perch to make aftermarket levers fit though.

You pay for what you get with levers. If you are gonna go with the cheap set I would personally get the silver ones as all the other colours will fade and look like crap after a few months.

Yeah but where do you buy them from mate? Are they all universal? They just say will fit gsxr etc. I just need short levers long ones wont fit.

Brake levers are no problem. Plenty of compatible ones.
You need to change the clutch perch. I used a Honda H4 perch. Then you also need a custom clutch cable with a 90* bend rather than a 45* bend.

Other and better option is LSL. They make 100% compatible levers for the GS500. About $120 a lever. You should be able to get them in the UK rather easily.

So any of those brake levers will fit my gs? Any aftermarket for any bike?

It's just the clutch perch I'd need then. Cool stuff. Might have to keep an eye out.  :D

cheers.

A list I compiled of compatibility. If you want to pay the price you can buy the LSL levers from Germany. They are a direct replacement for the clutch (the only one). as stated, there is lots of compatibility for the brake. I used an H4 Honda perch for the clutch. Others have used SV650 perches. I do have a spare custom cable for the H4 perch that fits the GS500. No spare perch, but had 3 cables made when I needed one.

I do have a spare custom cable for the H4 perch that fits the GS500. No spare perch, but had 3 cables made when I needed one.

Who made your custom clutch cables? I have been thinking of getting one made to fit a SV650 clutch perch, but not sure where to get one.

Maybe I'm crazy, but when I wanted my levers shorter I just cut them shorter. Ever heard of a hacksaw? Pick up some cheap or OEM levers and cut them to fit.  :thumb:

Does the SV650 perch not work with our clutch cable? Hmm.....this could be a problem for me.

The cable sticks out of the stock GS500 perch at a 45 degree angle (or so) towards the front of the bike. Without this, the cable would hit the dash. On most other bikes the cable sticks straight out of the perch. If you put that type of a perch on a GS500 you have to use a cable with a 90 degree bend in it so that it clears the dash. The stock GS500 cable only has a 45 degree bend in it.

At least that is how I understand it.

I hadnt even noticed that.

Im glad this conversation is happening now, since my bars arent in yet i still  have time to source a new cable...

Already done that. But some mot'ers are funny about having the ball end missing. Heard most will pass it now so will keep the standard cut down ones.  :D

Some people wish to install ASV levers because they fold and do not break like a fixed lever does upon dropping the bike.  The problem is that ASV does not make levers for the GS500.  The handlebar tube is of a standard diameter--the same as many other bikes--so one would think they could just purchase a perch for a different bike and then an ASV lever.  Let's say one buys a perch for a SV650S then an ASV SV650S clutch lever and then mount the perch on the GS500 handlebar.

The problem is the clutch cable and the geometry of the perch: A stock GS500 perch has the clutch cable opening set at 45 degrees and then the clutch tube coming off the perch is bent at 45 degrees, so the cable will clear the instrument bucket.

Put on any other perch and they all have their cable opening at zero degrees (parallel to the handlebar).  Then with a 45 degree clutch cable tube the cable will not clear the instrument bucket.  So one might think to install a SV650 clutch cable since they have a 90 degree clutch tube; however, the radius of the 90 degree bend is nearly 3.5" and so the cable still will not clear the instrument bucket.

The 45 degree clutch cable tube on the GS500 is short and being already coming off a 45 degree perch the cable can then clear the instrument bucket.

Looks like LSL levers are the only ones to make folding levers that will specifically fit a GS500 perch.  Unless another aftermarket vendor makes a folding lever that specifically fits a GS500, one may have to stick with fixed levers or pay the price for LSL levers.  But then, there might be something new from another aftermarket vendor to solve this peculiar issue?

I used these eBay adjustable levers http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/260816341341 (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/260816341341) with a SV650 clutch perch.
They are available as shorties as well.
I would advise staying with black or silver colours, you can see how the red adjusters have faded with sunlight.
Other than the fading I love the levers, Nice CNC machined pieces and being adjustable is a boon! Has anyone else found the stock levers reach suited for someone with fingers like ET?

What a coincidence I just managed to break my clutch lever and perch tonight then found this thread. I need a cheap but decent replacement as well. So should I buy a OEM replacement or find something newer?
