Was traveling down the road, and bike was acting funny (carb issues, never ending) so I pulled over and adjusted the idle and mixture, and went to carry on. Dog jumped in front of me mid turn, so I turned and braked left, and it high-sided me over the right side of the bike, and when I was done rolling, my bike was traveling straight towards the lake, when it slowed down, and crashed end of end. I ran after it thinking I could save it, or try to do something, idk. Well got to it, shut her down, and put her back upright and it SEEMED ok.
jumped back on, and tried to continue on my way, Idle was around like, 7k rpm, so I stopped at another side street, shut her down, and checked the carbs, boots, w/e. Than, she wouldn't start up. So with on the kickstand, and in Neutral (least the light was ok) I was trying to get it to start, figured the button must have f%&ked itself up or something. I go to lean it up to sit on it for an attempt to jump start it (I had power, just no crank) and it started and TOOK OFF towards the lake. You can see where it landed in the pics.
I ran over to it, thinking "what the f%$k, It crashed twice in one day" and go to lift it back up AGAIN. It bursts into flames under the bike. I run to the lake with my helmet (no, I didnt think to close the vents) and tried dousing it with water. It blew, guess a gass line let go orsomething, and I called 911.
Fire dept and PD showed up, put her out.
PD said I wasn't at fault, didn't write me a citation, and put it in the report that it was not due to rider error.
BTW, the fire truck almost hit the SAME EXACT f%$king DOG that I did.
I hope insurance helps. I have full coverage for a reason.

DAMN dog started all of that!! Wow, glad you're okay! Hopefully insurance will take care of you!!! As for the dog... :2guns: next time...just kidding!!!
That'll buff out...
-Jessie
Time to move on, more parts for adidasguy?
That sucks man. At least you didn't get hurt & have a pretty funny story.
It sucks, but the safest thing to do in that situation is hit the dog.
"Unsafe at any speed."
Wow dude. That really freaking sucks :(
Holy freaking sheet xune! Man that's a total rough trot. Glad your ok though.
So glad you are ok man, Bikes can be replaced but you cannot.
BTW, Can I have the engine guards?

BTW, Can I have the engine guards?
You knew it was coming...
-Jessie
Real bummer. rarely do I hear of bikes bursting into flames.
We can rebuild her -we have the technology (and the parts).
Stay with us. You are a valuable member of the group.
Glad you didn't get hurt.
Good you got pictures. Put a tractor seat on it and you have a bobber!
Lets see: Seat - got one. Probably should replace the wiring harness: got one. New carbs: got some. Tank: it will buff out. Frame: powder coat it. New rear tire. New chain.
Yep - we can have her back on the road in a month.
Holy crap dude...She must have been stuck in gear among other things after going end over end. I think you win the most spectacular fireball of a bike award. Insurance should cover it. Time for a new bike. Realistically, I don't think it's worth trying to rebuild her.
I mean really Xune! If you didn't want to go with Flick on a ride you could have just said something. We would have understood!
Oh, wait I know what it is. You didn't want to buy everyone one McDonalds! MMMHMMM the truth comes out!
Mary
Seriously, glad your okay that sucks man.
2nd in line for the engine guards........
You took a pic of the bike while it was still engulfed in flames? That's gangster! :thumb:
Xune,
You had better wanna check on that insurance policy.
A vehicle that has been in a fire is an automatic NON-Repairable Write Off (at least down here in Aust)
So you are inline to be paid out.
BUT
Your exhaust man. What the...? I feel some wiggle room for insurance to get out of this one Unless they knew about the exhaust mod.
Keep us posted how you go.
Michael
UHHHHH. I'm at lost for words. I have never seen this happen before. WTF. Glad your OK.
Remove some of the add-ons like engine bars before they take her away from you.
I'm at a loss for words. Something like that would be devastating - especially after all the work you did on her.
Wow.......glad you're ok man. That's the important thing.
Salvage what you can from the bike - it probably will be a total loss. Grab those clip ons too!
That sucks man glad u ok. you can take the payout and then buy the bike back from the insurance co. I have seen people do that with cars. you could get $2000 or whatever and then pay them like $200 or something and just part it out to us.
Yes - salvage whatever you can. Those are all after-market parts which you should get to keep. Or maybe you can buy irt back from the insurance company for salvage price, un-titled, then part out what is salvageable.
I think you have a testamonial for those engine bars. The engine cases look good! The bars did their job.
I think if my bike was burning, there was nothing I could do and had a camera --- I'd take pictures.
Too bad the next Picture Challenge isn't "Your bike with fire on it." - You'd be a shoe-in!
But, in all seriousness, sorry for your loss.
That is really bad news man, glad you're still here to tell the tale though.
If the aftermarket parts were listed on your insurance they need to stay on.
Be careful about jumping in and replacing things. An assessor can see when things have been replaced and that kind of thing will not bode well for you. Do it if you want, just letting you know it might be frowned upon.
Michael
Everything was sadly listed on my insurance at retail value, and I'm covered for up to 3k for parts, accessories, and add-ons (including my gear) so, I wont be saving the community and striping the bike for ya'll...
You dont want it anyway. The fire was so hot, it melted all the aluminum into a ball. The bracker for the left engine guard is warped, as is the frame, rim, tank (its like it melted).
The petcock, all the wiring, and that stuff just kinda burnt away. Ill take a pic of the pig-iron rear brake cylinder and gas cap. Shattered.
Unfortunatly, besides the front end which even has some melting, there isn't much on this bike I'd want to give back to the community.
Even my shiney freshly painted clip on's, the left side is bent up, and forward. Probably isn't safe anymore.
I cried like a little Buddha Loves You when I was telling steph.

Man I feel for you BUT as I stated before the bike can be replaced and YOU cannot. It might not be much comfort to you but to everyone else its great you are here to tell us. :kiss3:
Usually on a total the buy back from insurance first rights are yours - not to the salvage yard the ins company has contracted with, and and the buy back is usually a % of the amount they pay out. In NC it was 10% if older than 10 years and 15% if newer than 10.
I got both a savage and my GS back that way from crashes.
Cool.
Buddha.
Ouch! As they teach in MSF, always have an emergency plan..."If a dog runs out in front of me, ramp off of the little SOB and land in the lake to prevent spontaneous combustion." How's that?
You are going to get enough money from insurance to get a new bike, and you are ok. This is good news man. You had a high side and you Were well enough to try to get back on her afterwards. That's a great story in itself. Do you have any injuries at all?
Condolences , dude, that was a nice lookin bike ... depending on the ordinances where u live, that dog's owner may have some legal culpability; your account indicates the fire dept may be good witnesses if ya wanna pursue it.
Wow, that is the craziest ride I have ever heard of. Normally you here about a crash but not 2 with an end result of fire. Im very sorry as well my friend. I really, really hope that you get another GS and stay on the board with us. It would be a shame to lose you over a freakin off leash Dog. Keep us posted on how the insurance thing goes for you. Hang in there buddy. You WILL RIDE AGAIN! Peace.
Ahh, you're still a 'twinner.
Glad you're not hurt bad. Hope you get back on two wheels soon.
Glad you're okay man!!
Sucks about the bike.
but hopefully the insurance payout lets you smile :thumb:
Damn! Definitely glad you were able to walk away from that one. Good luck with you next steps!
Holy hell!!!!
You are alive and OK. That is most important.
Everything else is trivial.
Take some time and whatever you do, stay with the forum.
Can anyone explain what caused the fire?
"It blew, guess a gass line" Even so, you still need spark to make the fuel burn so I don't understand what happened
Maybe a flash fire from the surface heat of the motor? Or maybe some steel grinding a rock on it's way down? Either way, where there's a combustible liquid there's a potential fire.
First off I am glad you're ok and you will be getting another bike. Definitely should have run the dog over it would have been much less fiery.
Anything could have caused the fire. Remember there is also a battery in there that could have shorted in one thousand different ways.
Anyway, glad you're ok. Now go bike shopping.

I'll ride on, and I'll always be on here, as I am with redpepperracing.com and thirdgen.com.
Doubt I'll get another gs500 anytime soon, int he future, most likely.
used my friends 2003 R6 today for 200 miles, actually more comfortable for me than the gs.
He made me promise not to detail it cause he felt bad, I promised him I wouldn't.
And I lied.
Polished the AL bits so bright they look like chrome. Bike looks almost brand spanking new.
It has 38k miles.
Wow, glad ur ok. that fire, holyyyy shaZam! dude, good thing the bike wasnt on top of u
damn dude, glad you made it out ok. darwin called, and said you should just let nature take its course and take the damn dog out.
this is quite sad.
wow. I just saw this thread.
that r6 DOES look nice though!
Sorry to hear you lost your GS in such dramatic circumstances and I'm glad to hear you are OK - having binned mine recently I know how you feel must... hope your insurance comes good so you can move on!
Holy shaZam! man! I just now saw this. Glad you're okay!
Did someone wish your GS to die in a fire...? Those ingrates!!!
I bet Adidasguy would rebuild it for you, hehe!
I would be happy to assist in rebuilding him/her/it. After a fire, what sex is your bike?
Wouldn't it be funny to leave as many parts burnt and not repaint them? That would be one weird bike to ride. Bet it would get lots of stares.
There might be some competition on tge naming rights Adidas
Are fire damaged frames considered structurally sound? I know there's issues with it in cars, like an engine bay fire basically writes off the whole chassis.
If the frame is toast, rebuild it and slap a Chinese name on it like Hoysung so when it falls apart you can blame it on cheap Chinese steel. :flipoff:

Frames toast. Got hot enough to melt Aluminum bits to slag, definitely super-heated the frame, and will be brittle as a result.
I couldn't defile my wonderful Spanish bike by making it Chinese... She deserves to be put at rest. Not much is left of her.
Friend is letting me borrow his 2005 996 super hawk until I get a ride of my own.
Fun, fun bike. :icon_razz: :woohoo:
Sorry about what happened. Kinda reminds me of this,

Good luck.
Talk about going out with style! Glad you're ok.

Xune, glad you are ok. Also you must be pretty lucky or are a relative of Chuck Norris. You wreck a bike and just hop back on and wreck it again and still live to tell the tale! AND got pictures of it on fire! It's also cool that you have friends that can lend you bikes until you get another one.
I don't know how I missed this xune! I didn't even know til I saw you got a new sexy red replacement. Wow, just finished reading it all. That picture of it on fire is avatar worthy! Talk about doing it right if you're going to do it. If I wreck, I want my bike to go up in a ball of flames like that too! But, really I'm glad you're good and even came out with a new 636, smiling all the way into the horizon. Rock on sir.
Just glad to hear you're okay.
Yes glad you are ok, I don't know what I would do if I lost my only ride. I don't have any friends with bikes to loan me. If you decide to part it out save those headlight side mounts, I know a Twinner who is looking. Cough Afroese Cough
So what's the update? have you found a new stede yet? pictures, reports, updates.... c'mon don't leave us hangin' like this... :icon_razz:

I miss my GS.
Any donations?
Frames, wheels, wireing?
I will paint it and advertise GStwin if I make a bike entirely from donations!!!
Xune, you missed it dude. Gave a way an airbox, an air filter, PAIR system, a horn, and a chain guard and bar clamps. All free including shipping.
Sent the last item out a week and a half ago. Not sure what you could have done with those parts, but it's a start.
Im going to make a new post for this.
glad your ok xune ... now.... shoot the dog... find the owner ... make them eat the dog raw!! ... tell them they are complete gibbering drooling fools for letting their dog out to run around like that .. and make them promise never to let a dog run loose again...
i really like dogs! ... honest.... and cats too.... but i dont like owners that cant supervise or control their animal... cretins!
Xune your in Fla right?
I got a rear wheel an old tach, old head, laying around, old chain guard various other things. We should get together one day!
