Let me point out a few things here. First of all, unless he's using rust colored chain lube, the chain has already begun to "fret". It's toast.
Also, isn't that fairing DANGEROUSLY close to the exhaust pipe? Has it ever even been ridden with that fairing? - Upon further inspection I noticed the fairing is indeed metal - still, it's going to heat up like nobody's business and there's no telling how long the paint or whatever it's coated with will last being THAT close to the exhaust. Might just be my neigh-sayer attitude, though. Dunno.
Next point...he claims he has to sell his bikes because he doesn't have time anymore...yet he then turns around and says he'll trade for a sport tourer? Um...okayyyy...
Unless he hasn't ridden it in a while (possible but unlikely), the lack of chain maintenance is a sign that he likely did very little maintenance - was probably slack about changing oil, etc..

couldnt see the chain to tell if it were rusty . what little i could see didnt look too bad. some chains rust quickly, some do not. chain on my goped does . so its lubed daily. almost daily on 3 of my gs' as well

Kijona - if that fairing is metal, I would be amazed. That would mean it was hand made and took hours upon hours to do. Airtech sells that fairing (or one very similar) made from fiberglass. And when he said he didn't have time for this bike, he probably meant this "vintage" bike. Old bikes generally require more upkeep to maintain.
While there are definitely flaws in this bike, I wouldn't mind throwing a leg over it.

I'm looking really hard at that picture of the chain, I really cannot seem to tell if it's rust or some funky colored chain lube that was put on sparingly. I don't know. Especially considering its location on the chain, I'd say it's rust.
The fairing looks metal - look at the closeup of it - the hole looks like a hole in metal not plastic or fiberglass. Also, how could it be ½" from the header and not melt if it WASN'T metal? I know fiberglass and some plastics can withstand a lot of heat but holy crap. Additionally, the lines look a little rough like it's custom made. Meaning worth less. Custom made stuff (aka homebrew) doesn't bring more in the bike market. Sure, it looks good but is it worth $4000? I think not.
I'd take it for a ride too but I'd never pay more than $2000 for it. If he really expects to get that much he should try selling it somewhere other than Craigslist.
Also, as far as not seeing the photos...it may be that he recently updated and added more pictures. Dunno :dunno_black:

They make heat shields for their fairings and other products for just that type of application. All of Airtech's products are "custom made" and they say they will need fit to each application. So that's probably what he did.
And custom made (or home brew) does not always equal crap. Well built items can and very often do raise the price of a bike. Find out how much a normal CB750 costs, then add up the cost of the fairing, tank, seat, custom paint, and anything else on that bike. I bet it gets real close to his asking price or even over. Just because it's not your "thing", doesn't mean you have to examine every little detail.

I just think the guy is asking a little too much, might not be being completely honest (it is CL after all), and may have not been the best about maintenance. I'm sorry if I wasn't clear or came across the wrong way. I know custom bikes like that hold a special place in your heart and I wasn't trying to offend you.

I'm more than willing to pay a slight premium for parts that I know I'd be adding anyways. Id'a happily paid another coupla hundred bucks if the GS I just bought had come with a full exhaust and springs.
There are smart buyers who know what they're looking for out there. If you (as a seller) can afford to wait for the right buyer to come along, you'll definitely get your premium price.

I suppose you're right...things are only worth what someone is willing to pay. Sure, you MIGHT find somebody that's willing to pay that much for it. What I was saying is that you can't expect a premium because in the world of cars/motorcycles etc., custom stuff doesn't add value. Most people don't care about that, as far as I'm concerned. It's just a very specific market.
I believe the dustbin fairing was made to cover the kick starter, on these bikes the kick starter will turn backward flip and it will at that time be outside of the dustbin fairing.
