Title: Good vendor: Bolt Depot
Post by: Zwerski on April 24, 2012, 09:25:08 PM
I was able to perform my "switch the rusty and/or ugly, visible, low-stress bolts and washers with stainless allen head bolts" project on my "E" this evening. As the project title infers, my bike has (had) quite a few rusted, seized or otherwise horked bolts on the frame, mostly due to a PO having a battery leak acid onto some of the components and frame, but also having been originally registered in New York state, where a lot of sh!t rusts. Many of the phillips head screws and bolts had rusted or distorted at their torque points, so I decided on this easy but very satisfying project, which also necessitated purchasing new T-handled allen wrenches and a Thread Checker tool, or so my wife was led to believe.

A good friend recommended McMaster-Carr for my stainless needs, but their products could only be purchased in boxes of 25, 50, 100, etc. but I only needed at the most ten of any one of the ten or so varieties and sizes I ended up ordering. This would have made my costs head close to $100, before shipping or any taxes.

Enter Bolt Depot.  :thumb: Using their online website, I was able to choose small quantities of all of the required stuff, and I even got extras of some, luckily. For $26 bucks shipped, I got stainless allen drive button head bolts for the front fender, headlight, chain guard, heel guards, battery box, side plastics, tank bracket, rear brake reservoir, air box, fuse box, rectifier, grab handle, and probably one or two other spots, with nuts or washers where needed. Al, the stuff came in labeled ziplock baggies too.

*disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with Bolt Depot, just a satisfied customer.

Bolt Depot is a great place to buy small quantities. Reasonable prices, great selection, and service. What more could you ask for?

Is there anything for the bolts mounting the handbars to the tree?

Another vote. Chiming in to say I just got an order from them a couple days ago. Plenty of rusted fasteners on my GS as well (thanks previous owner :P) and I love being able to buy 1-4 bolts instead of 25.

Not to my knowledge, though I've been buying from both of those shops, and they've been great to deal with.
