Title: sidestand switch
Post by: rpkknives on April 25, 2012, 10:53:36 PM
The GS didn't come with a sidestand switch and I'm trying to do this build as cheap as possible. Is there a way to bypass it without having the actual switch? I have the green wire that plugs into it but I dint know if I can just leave it unplugged or do I need to splice it in somewhere else?

Someone else will probably know better than me, but I think you bridge the two wires before that plug. Mine had already been bypassed so I removed the switch. If you don't come right I'll pull my covers off and have a good look.

It was bypassed on my old harness too, they had the green plugged into a black/white wire but I tried doing the same with this harness and now when I turn the key on I hear a clicking noise like its shorting out. Not really sure what other wire to splice it with unless it splices in with the sidestand relay somehow.

Short the green to ground. Or put in the side stand switch. Cheap. I got a pile of them.
You can verify anything with the wiring diagram. You'll see the side stand switch completes connection to ground when side stand up. That energizes the side stand relay.

I'm pretty sure I have a spare floating around. If you're willing to wait a little bit and cover shipping, I can send it to you.

You can bypass it by installing a jumper across the wires that connect to the switch. See the wiring diagram. You can buy suitable connectors from your local auto-parts or electronics shop.

I recommend keeping the switch on the street bikes. I've ridden bikes with the switch removed... It really sucks to take off with your sidestand down.

I had NO IDEA that this bike had this "feature" of killing them engine when you try to put it into gear with the kickstand down. It took me a little bit to figure out what the heck was going on, but definitely a really cool/safe idea.

Every bike I'm aware of has a sidestand kill switch standard. Not sure if it's mandated by law or not, but generally it's a good idea.

Cool thanks guys, Ill try grounding it out again when everything gets put back together. Im making a new seat pan for the modded subframe now so I still have allot of wire re-routing to do yet but I may take you up on that offer burning1. Ill send you a PM If I decide to re-install the switch. Thanks again!

Don't ground it... You've got to jump it.

Sorry, jump the green to the black/white ground wire is what I meant.
