I thought I'd fix-up my paint a bit now that we're buried in snow. I got some 3M Perfect-It fine-cut rubbing compound (and some swirl remover and one-step wax), and tried rubbing it in with the wax pad on a 10" WalMart orbital wax buffer.
Nada.
Zip.
Even small scratches seem unfazed by the rubbing compound. Now, the guys at the car dealer have these nice Bosch air-powered right-angle buffers that do amazing things to scratches, but those are like $200. Is using the WallyWorld wax buffer just a stupid idea? Maybe the little 3M 4" round hand pads would apply the rubbing compound better?
I am not sure what rubbing compound I have but it works fine with only elbow grease. It is a bit gritty and usually puts some of the paint color on the shammi. So I use it as a last resort. I havn't had any luck with scratches that are deep enough to reac the primer.
Yeah, the Suzuki paint seems thin as paper. I had a few flakes of clearcoat over the "Suzuki" name on the tank just fall right off when I went over them. No amout of buffing is going to fix that!
I guess it will need to be prepped and then given a new clearcoat :( . That's not gonna happen now, with a temp of 2 deg. F (I can get the garage just above freezing if I work, which is OK for waxing, but not for painting).
