Title: '05 GS500F sat since '07, only 1400 miles. What should I do before?
Post by: bosco0325 on April 29, 2012, 11:04:58 AM
Hello all; newbie here.  Ever watch "Storage Wars"?  Well, I got an '05 GS500F w/ only 1400 miles on it.  It's been sitting in a storage shed.  Tires & hoses in good shape; paint is spotless.  I added some Seafoam to the cylinders & let it sit for a few hours, added some Seafoam to 1 Ga. fresh gas, new battery & cranked it a few times w/ the plugs out.  I then put new plugs in & fired it up.  It turned right over, but wouldn't stay running, even a full throttle like it starving for fuel.  There is a ton of white smoke, which I was told to expect from the Seafoam.

I honestly expected it, but safe to say I need the carbs ran through?  Also, I had runoff of a ton of dark, dark fuel out of the airbox runoff hose.  And per tons of threads I've read through, I do recognize a "varnish" smell.....

Thanks for the help!

Do the following (others may chime in too)

First:  Buy a manual. A shop manual that is. It will help with maintenance and the below items.

1:  Completely drain and clean gasoline tank. Make sure no rust etc is in there. Check fuel pet c o c k for blockage. Remove fuel screen from tank and clean.
2:  Take off carbs and do a complete clean. Not just sea foam, clean the jets and float bowls.
3:  Replace plugs, check air filter and replace that too.
4:  Change oil. Be sure to use genuine Suzuki motorcycle oil or equivalent. Do not use automobile oil.
5:  Check tire pressure and all fluids. Be sure tires are not hard or dry rotted.

Good luck with the purchase!

seafoam in the cyls was probably overkill.

like the above, drain the tank, add new fuel, try to run.
wont idle?
clean carbs and jets, specifically the idle jets. (Replace idle circuit with recommended jets from wiki)
check float height and adjust if needed
replace spark plugs just because. They are probably fouled now.
go ride. Upgrade later.
