I'm still doing the advancer mod. Now that it's winter you guys/gals should be able to send your rotors to me. Price is still $5.00.

Send your rotor and I'll mod it and send it right back.
:thumb:
I'm asking the stupid question...
Some of us have bought bikes, not entirely sure what has been done to them. For example, I'm pretty sure my bike has been jetted, but wasn't told when I bought it. How can we tell a stock advancer from a V&H or otherwise modified one?
Hey Bob, how is the turnover speed on getting them out? I've been wanting to do your mod for a while but I've been commuting to school on the bike. Now that the semester is nearly over I can send the rotor to you if I can have it back before Jan 25 :)
If it doesn't take you long to modify it, I could probably take a weekend drive down to Salinas so we don't have to mail anything
Quote from: TurkinaHow can we tell a stock advancer from a V&H or otherwise modified one?
Pretty sure the V&H ones are stamped VH or V&H on the side facing out when you remove the cover.
The V&H rotors are black metal and have V&H stamped on them. Although some are barely readable.
The stock rotors are kinda goldish in color (some silvery).
They have 01D0 (part #) stamped on them.
The CA. rotor with 5 degrees advance has 5-35 stamped on it.
The other models have 12 degrees advance with 12-28 on it.
After I modify a rotor, I paint it black.
Also if you remove the rotor you will see a small hole for the crank pin instead of a slot.
Turn around time is roughly a week. With the holidays and depending on your location it could be a couple days more
I understand that this mod makes your bike quicker off the line but how does it do that?
The advancer sets the initial timing at 17 degrees.
Most GSs have 12 degrees with the CA. models starting at only 5 degrees..
The igniter box (black box) advances the timing to a max of 40 degrees above around 3000 rpm on all GSs.
So the advancer mainly improves lowend response. I'm not sure how it effects anything beyond 3000 rpm, but it will definately wakeup your motor.
Especially bikes with the 5-35 rotor :thumb:
so i live all the way in bama. on the other coast of you. how much would it cost me to ship it to you. grand total, shipping plus price. also, how long do you think this would be? maybe 2 or 3 weeks?
Shipping has been around $3.85
So for less than $10.00 you can have a modified rotor that will do the same as a $45.00 V&H rotor (if you could ever find one).
Figure 3 days from you to me, 1 day to modify and 3 days back (1 week)
Bob,
any idea what the shipping will be from the uk?.
Also how long will it take ship and return..
Sure a few in the uk ,will kill for one :guns: ...
I got mine(v&h) for the states a year back,cost lots$$$$
 Tony

I've never sent any to the UK. It can't be much.
The package would be less than 1 LB in weight.
My zip code in CA is 93907.
Find out how much shipping will be from Uk and put the same amount in the package to cover my shipping cost.
The Christmas holiday is the only thing that will slow shipping.
I would figure about a week each way normally. ;)
Are motorcycles not required to pass emisions tests?
At least here in CA (and probably US in general) there are no emissions testing.
So Bob, it sounds too good to be true. Whats the catch?
Their is no catch Ash for three easy payments of ....
Sorry sounded like a infomercial.
Sounds like I could use a ignition advance too. :thumb:

What a difference a few degrees of timing can make :)
My bike feels so much better now and the acceleration is much smoother. I have a California bike so I'm going from 5 degrees to 17 degrees initial. I'm not sure how the change is going from 12 to 17 but I'm really happy with my results. It even sounds a little different at idle :)
Thanks again Bob :thumb:
what is the probability of this part breaking or failing after you tamper with the OEM part? how much would a new OEM part cost, anyone know?
Quote from: Lex143mswhat is the probability of this part breaking or failing after you tamper with the OEM part? how much would a new OEM part cost, anyone know?
I highly doubt the altered rotor will fail. Bob fills in the stock slot on the rotor by welding it and mills the new locating hole for the crank pin. The rotor is cad plated steel and I am not worried about it failing or breaking.
I installed mine today and it went on without any problems. I did a short run on the road to warm it up and adjusted the idle down a hair. Changing initial advance usually changes the idle a little bit.
There is NO possibilty of the modified rotor failing.
It is simply bolted on the end of the crank. All it does is rotate with the crank.
It's nothing more than a piece of steel. The signal generator pickups are magnets that send a signal to the black igniter box when ther rotor passes by. They can go bad (rarely) but not because of the rotor.
A new rotor from Suzuki is around $60.00.
The dealer I go to has a new one in stock. If someone REALLY needed it, I can get it for $40.00 with my discount.
just came across this thread, bob do you still mod? I also sent you an email.
Yes I still do the advancer mod :thumb:

has anyone reported how this affects higher rpm performance and things like mpg? just curious, i could really see this mod making the bike a lot more fun in town..
No effects on mpg and throttle response is better.Pulls a little harder from lower in the rpm range all the way up to top end.I also did some other mods to go with it.
I dont know why but I was always under the impression this mod was for the older E models, am I mistaken? I have a 07 F model and if this would improve bottem end I will buy one and send it out to you!
Bob cannot mod the 04+ rotors. They are a different design.
On the 04+ ignition systems, the CDI is configured to adjust the timing accordingly to your throttle position relayed back to the system therefore they have basically maximized the power output through the band, if a plate is used as with the gs500e you can still advance them the same way and the computer will still overadjust and modify the timing curve.
I specialize in engine electronics by trade.
Ok I am not really good at electronics, but I think I read if I do the mod myself using the plate method(like is shown in the mods section) I would effectively be tricking the computer and feel a gain in bottom end?

if it is required, run some alcohol in with teh fuel. leans bikes waaay out. passed emissions with a failing vehicle in az this way

I know I am late to the discussion, but Ihave a Broussard Advancer and it behave JUST like ben2go said.
Thanks again, Bob!!! :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:
I'm waiting to hear back from bob, but can this be done w/ a 2006 GS? also is this what i'm suppose to send him?(http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g277/philly0128/IMAGE_00055-1.jpg)

I was planning on sending Bob my rotor this week, but I forgot it at home when I went back to school. So I'll have to wait another week.

That pic is the ignition rotor but it can't be modified on the 04+ engines. Some say the ignition can be fooled into advancing the timing by modifying the pick up plate.

Bob, any thoughts on advancing the timing further? I'm forced to run 93 octane for racing (spec fuel rule) so I bet I've got some headroom...

You may want to send him an email or a pm so he knows you have a question. I don't think he gets on here that often.
I still check in occasionally ;)
The original V&H advancers bumped the timing to 17 degrees btdc.
Since they know what they're doing, I wouldn't go beyond that more than 1 or 2 degrees.
I run 92 octane in my street GS even with high comp pistons and a milled head without any problems.
My racebike uses VP ultimate 4 (don't even know the octane rating)
It's oxygenated, so it makes more power.
I tried a 12 degree rotor once, but really lost the lowend grunt out of corners.
Never had an issue with the 17 degree timing :thumb:
:o Just kidding!
Did you get my email about me forgetting my rotor at home?
Got it :thumb:

Just wanted to make sure, so you wouldn't be expecting my rotor and it not show up.
Guess I need to get my rotor out then... going to need a bigger impact gun. :P
Actually, anyone got a rotor kicking loose I could buy off ya to send to Bob for modification?
I have 2-3. You can pay Bob B for his help and shipping, and He'll send 1 to you and the rest back to me. I'll ship to him at my cost. Essentially you get it for 2 way shipping costs type.
And - I dont need your rotor, just donate to the next one who comes along here asking for one ... if you ever get it off ... BTW someone showed up with a rotor bent like a banana. While taking it off , it broke in 1/2 but atleast it came off.
Cool.
Buddha.
That sounds fair to me. I'll see if I can go the extra mile and do a 'before and after' dyno run as well. Bike is otherwise stock save for a good filter and a jet kit.
I have a 06 GS and bob recently did a mod for me that he wasn't sure if it would have worked or not. I put it on the bike last sat and so far so GREAT! my bike picks up from every stop w/ out jerking, I can put my feet up even sooner now! he wants me to monitor it for about 2 weeks so I will keep you guys posted.
I just sent mine off to Bob.
Thanks a ton Bob!

If you're shipping it to bob include a money order for agreed amount.
Bob,
I'd like to do your mod. Mine is a '91
Do you have one to swap? or do I have to send out mine?
I would prefer to have your rotor sent to me.
Cash is king (US dollars)

OK I'll send them to Bob, you send him $$ OK so he'd ship 2 things back, OK I'll pay shipping to send these ...
OK I'll send it to him ~tommorow afternoon. But if I miss that, its not going to be till monday.
Cool.
Buddha.
Let me know yor shipping cost Buddha, and I can cover that as well for helping out.
Naa ... Bob is getting like 3, I get back 2 so I should pay for shipping.
Maybe I'll let him keep one so he can do a circulation type thing.
Cool.
Buddha.
Thanks Bob....got mine back from you and it works great!
Mine works great too.
Thanks for everything Bob.
Enjoy the smoke!
Would I still be able to use 87 octane with this mod?
I filled my tank with 87 today and rode about 100 miles.
No problems here! :icon_mrgreen:
still doing MOD? if so let me know

I know this guy hasnt been here for a long time and I know this is an old thread and I know Bob checked in last month but I gotta ask..........
Anyone else have this done on an 04+ and Bob, are you still doing these? I'd like it done
ya i would like this also, am i reading this right tho, its only $5 and shipping both ways. being that i would like the one i ship to him back?
^^^Hey bud, you ever notice me and you are doing like the same things and same projects....LOL
HEY Y'all, I'm still around.
So far I still have the house and equipment. So I can still do the advancer mod.
But for the newer style ignitions, your best bet is slotting the screw holes to move the ignition plate 5 degrees counterclockwise. I've tried modifying the rotor, but I never got a chance to test it out myself and feedback was not enough to feel confident it worked.
The original style ignition with a single tab on the rotor and twin pickups, is no problem modifying the rotor.
The cost has gone up, like everything else. I'm asking $10 for the mod and shipping from here is around $6.50. Still the cheapest performance mod around. The original V&H advancers went for $40+
NOW, just so you know. I'm self employed. This time of year I have to work my ass off to make enough to survive the slow winter months. I've been working up to 3 different jobs a day
7 days a week for the last month and a half (I guess that's a good thing).
I come home pretty beat, so I don't bother checking emails or responding quickly.
This must be a problem for some, since they never follow through after I get back to them
with my mailing address and relevant info.
So just be patient, I'm old and tired and I don't like writing anything when the brain ceases to function. Send me a email bobbroussard@x.cx
I'll get back to you. Once I receive your rotor I make sure it gets done right away, no matter
what. So don't worry about having your bike inoperative for longer than shipping time to me and back. A week or less from the time you send the package, depending on location.
If you're out of the country, we just need to recalculate shipping cost.
O0 Bob
Bob. Thanks for the reply. I'm also self employed and was forced into it due to the crumbling economy so i full understand where you are coming from. I work many long nights and weekends to get my work completed and try to get caught up. It gets old fast but at least we get by.
Mine is an 07 with an 05 engine. $10 is nothing. I can run a mill and lathe and weld but I just don't know what I'm doing when it comes to modifying these.
With that being said, if you don't mind, I don't mind sending you an 07 rotor (not like the blown engine is going to miss it anyway) and reporting back how it feels. If it makes any positive difference then its well worth it. If it makes none then I lost a McDonalds lunch or two. No big deal there either.
You can send the rotor to me at;
Bob Broussard
761 Alvarado Dr.
Salinas, CA. 93907
I did a couple in the past, but I only got feedback once. The guy couldn't tell if it made any real difference. I've had motors with the new ignition, but I replaced everything with the original style ignition so it would work in my bike (89). Therefore I've never been able to test things myself.
Not alot of GS500s around my town.
It would be great to give it another try.
O0 Bob
Thanks Bob. I'll have it out to you in the next day or so and the money will be in the box
