Title: Etiquette for Groups vs road pigs
Post by: Traveler on December 11, 2003, 11:46:11 PM
A while ago I was driving my car up Highway 99 to Whistler, faster than the traffic, but not the fast enought to score multi points if stopped. Nice day, supercharger whining, going to play hookey (that'd be a Canadian past-time), when a large bike runs up tight behind me.
I'm wishing I was on the GS, but  play the nice guy and pull over when we reach the double lane section for him to blow by; well, he promptly drops infront of me and slows down by 25 klicks, forcing me to brake, then about a dozen Honda Road Queens go by at a leisurely pace, before  he waves to me and I am stuck behind them for  10 kms until the next overtaking lane section.
Being  ready by then to see if the car would break the sound barrier I was stepping on the gas hard when our sweeper and blocker took BOTH lanes to prevent ANYBODY overtaking their charges. :x
I stopped and went for a walk on the beach to cool off.
OK guys, what say you?

If I'm in my truck or on my bike I will usually move over so the faster person can go by.  I know people like to tear it up in the twisties so I will usually let them by on a turn out if I think I can safely merge back onto the road.  If there's a long straight with a good view, I'll pull off to the side so they can pass safely

I really hate it people are just going down the road totally oblivious to the fact that their might be someone behind them that wants to go faster.  On the other hand, if I'm in front of someone that pissed me off for whatever reason, I'm going to be a prick and box them in

I know of large groups of Goldwhiner riders using this manuevering tactic on  group rides...They do it to keep everyone together.... The guy was running blocker...(they do it on the on/off ramps alot....)

That would have burned me pretty bad too man....

It's not polite of them to inconveinience you for their mistake.

Prior planning prevents poor performance.

They should read this:

At least you had a beach to go to...

Mental note to self:  Never allow to get passed by a Lead Sled, especially if there's a pack of 'em.   Instead, gas it and  :nana:

Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.  :nono:

What kind of car are you in? The supercharger caught my attention!

That tactic is known as the "slingshot", and it's useful for keeping a group of riders together.  Pretty smart, actually, if they keep going and don't slow you down.  On the other hand, I don't understand why they stayed slow once they were all in front of you.  Maybe you p***ed them off somehow beforehand.

Here's a link describing it:

In response, this is a cop-prone section where a wise man has his radar detector working both ways and still checks his mirror constantly. I didn't hold them up, I didn't piss them off because as soon as they appeared, I looked for the next overtaking section to let the bike/s go by. No sirree Robert, I was as courteous as a smart dog in a skunk's path.
It was they who donned the pig apparell (is Christmas getting to anybody else out there?) .
It's O.K though, I've bought myself an early Xmas present..................a valve extractor. 8)
