I recently got a Honda 919 and am giving the gs500e to the wife for her to learn on (she's been in love since I took her out). Anyway, I drove the 919 from Wisconsin back home to NW Indiana. Because I'm a tightwad, I took the Dan Ryan/Eden expressway through Chicago instead of the Skyway toll road. This means I had to put up with an hour of idiot drivers that like to squeeze an18ft extended SUV into a 10ft space in front of my in order to get to their final destination one second quicker. Well, I was following a buddy with GPS, so we needed to stay relatively close. Anyway, when people would try to squeeze in, I would give my favorite head shake and finger wag. This would cause most of them to stop trying and allow me to follow my buddy (this is in 1st gear/clutch riding traffic btw).
Last night, I had an SUV pull out in front of me while doing 35mph in town on my way back from a 100 mile day trip. It was dark, but I know they saw me as they crept out form the stop sign and then gunned it to try to slip over to the far lane (they needed to be in my lane for an upcoming turn). I had to slam on the front brakes in order to avoid t-boning them. It was a couple of teenage girls, so I decided not to flip them off as I usually would in that situation. I just looked over and gave the fatherly "disappointed" head shake. They slowed down, got behind me and did about 10mph under the speed limit to avoid having to see me again. I think embarrassing the driver is the best course of action.
I love the finger wag. What do you guys do?
So, what do you guys do to these idiots?
I've used both types of finger wag :nono: :flipoff:
As well as the shoulder shrug :dunno_white: as in "whatever you want to do, witch, I'll just wait on you!"
I have Stebel Nautilus air horn. I hit'em with that usually. Scares most people straight.
If they're trying to just muscle me out of the way, I'll look them in the eye and hold my position. If somebody is just not paying attention and drifting into my lane, I usually just ride very close to their car, to crowd their space. Moves'em over too.
Gestures, can escalate a situation until it becomes Road Rage. I can almost guarantee once it turns to road rage you are the one that will always lose unless you are CCW then you will be plastered all over national news if you brandish.
I let my 139db horn talk for me and just be as defensive as I can. If I know joe cager is going to pull out I prepare for it (expect them to do it and have other preparations for when it happens) because it will most likely happen.
Getting angry with someone only ruins the rest of your ride!

.45acp...actually I just ignore them :woohoo:
I got passed on a double-yellow windy twisty back road yesterday (50 MPH posted speed), and the guy driving the SUV almost clipped me. Not cool. All I did in reaction was beep out pathetic little toy-sounding horns.
Lol, goofy. I do carry my glock 26 in a shoulder holster when I'm commuting to work, but I'd never take it out for something as stupid as that. I think people that carry for intimidation will end up getting killed. You can generally tell, though, who will and will not get to the rage zone with gestures. If it ever came to that, you can safely outmaneuver virtually any car you will find on a normal road in order to get away from them.
:nono: Usually induces shame in most people, but can be rage inducing in an affliction wearing 20 something with more bark than bite.
Various hand gestures mixed with head shake. But I generally ride clear of cars. But if I do ride beside a car I do it right beside one of the front doors.
^ true. the head shake happens.
It's hard as hell sometimes when the adrenaline starts to flow... but I try to keep a lid on it and just get the hell away from the source of the problem.
I too have tge stebel nautilus. I give it a toot. Scares them.
Been on that stretch of road. Scary for a car let alone a bike. Tollway is like $7 now or something.
If it was minor, Ill just shake my head for sympathy from other drivers, and if they look they realise they cut me off, a closer call I honk, then head shake and over take agressively to pretty much say "f%$k you Buddha Loves You', if its real near miss, its, after safely avoiding, a long beep, ride next to them if possible, and regardless of road position give them the most agressive finger :flipoff: you could imagine, and then speed off.
Please note I'm not always agressive, I just get upset when people do dumb stuff, and like to make sure they realise that they did
It's usually a palm up WTF gesture or a showing they're number 1. However I did have a guy riding my ass in his truck so i got over to let him by and he kept following. I said screw and just pulled over to let him get on down the road and he whips it in behind me. Gets out with a damn bat. I don't know if he thought i was someone else or what. He said hello to my little friend (Springfield XD-45) before jumping back in the truck and hauling it out of there. Goes to show any situation can turn really bad really fast. I didn't know the guy from Adam but was fully commited to defending myself with deadly force. All over something stupid, his family would be one less. Since then I've avoided any road rage drivers as they really know not what they do and the cost that can come from it.
I do the finger wag too! And it usually gets an embarrassed reaction out of the cager that cut me off, or whatever, but at least now they know I'm there!
I'm seriously considering a horn upgrade to around 100dB, since the stock horn is like a toy and nobody hears it.
Lift your jacket and expose your holstered hand gun. This is sufficient in 100% of cases.
Generally, I just yield to idiots that can mangle me. I'm older now though.
I generally give idiot drivers a WTF hand motion, or an evil look. (which probably doesn't translate too well through my tinted visor.) :icon_lol:
the other day I had a guy waiting to pull into my lane, he kept creeping forward. He finally decided he didn't want to cut me off, but shook his head at ME as I went by!
Just yesterday some dumby cager mom came into my lane while we were making the left turn. I just grabbed brakes and got right behind her, i followed her for about a mile and when she went to turn right into her subdivision i swerved WAY to the left giving her the idea that she is an awful driver and at any time she could just come over and hit me. Her kids were in the car laughing so I thought it was pretty good. They also seemed very scared at the fact that I was following them. :2guns:

That is awesome...lol. Good for you to protect yourself. I bet he will think about doing that again to stangers.
I also have a Stebel Nautilis horn. That's my first line of defense.
If it turns into a heated road-rage, I tend to stand down. Here's why: I am in a much worse position than any cager. Yes, almost all of the time the cager is in the wrong, but I value my life more than some stupid road rage argument. I find that I am in a much worse position, and it's not worth it. My life is more valuable than that.
Last thing for me was black kid threw a rock at me. Or he pretended to,...which I gave him the 'cmoon!' gesture with a 'I k-eeel you' look. Luckily no incidents recently riding. Hopefully I don't get mangled on the way home after work now,...

Couple weeks ago I was riding through a neighborhood when I passed a few kids that looked like Junior High age, little hoodlum looking things. They yelled something as I passed, wasn't sure what they said but it sounded offensive. Without hesitation I hit the brakes, checked my 6, and pulled a U-turn. Before I was even through with the U-turn, they were all running the other direction.
Gave me a good laugh.

That's why I upgraded to the Stebel, I could barely hear my own horn when riding down the highway.
Speaking of horns, a friend of mine got tired of being shoved around in his rx-7 so we put a train horn on it. The compressor took up most of the rear and the horns had to be modified to fit under the hood. It would actually mess with the little rotary engine when he hit it, but NOBODY pushed him around after. I swear at least ten people crapped their pants when he hit that thing. Really funny riding downtown when he wanted to make sure people were alert. If he told you to put on the ear protection you listened. Maybe a little excessive.
Our horns operate at 12V DC correct?
New York drivers are like swimming with sharks. Nobody stays in lanes and they dart abruptly from one spot to the next. So I act like a fish and try not to get eaten. It's kinda zen in a weird way.
Once, there was this guy behind me honking his horn, even though I was following traffic and there was nowhere for me or anyone else to go. I ignored him, until he decided to make a right turn in my lane with me... the outside inside outside maneuver worked against me (yes... I had my blinker on, too). I commited to the turn and stayed right next him 2-3 feet from his face barely squeezing between him and oncoming traffic. I called him an a$$hole since he was right there. Later, as traffic became really jammed up, I was lane splitting and passed him ... waving my finger. Even if he had road rage at that point, that shark was stuck while I swam away quickly.
I now fake people out before making turns by shifting positions all over my lane until the second before the turn. That way they are not tempted to dart into my open space left for negotiating a turn. Hell, I shift positions constantly in my lane so drivers stop perceiving me as an open space to squeeze into.

Exactly. Unless the state has strong castle laws like Florida, you're more than likely going to prison if you ever use your gun outside of your home -- and even then it's a toss-up. I only carry mine to work and back, to friends' houses in the country for target practice, or the firing range. Although I wont pull my gun unless absolutely threatened with no escape, I will definitely let the shoulder holster show from time to time.
At last count there are 31 firearms in my possession, to include 9 pistols. However I can only effectively fire one at a time. Still working on it. If anyone is considering carrying go with something reliable yet inexpensive. Reason being if you ever have to use it you'll probably lose it. I go with a Springfield XD in 45 ACP as it has never misfired , has great accuracy and only cost about $500. If i had to give up my Wilson Combat I'd probably cry like a little girl. A little of topic but something to keep in mind. Truly hope it never comes to it for everyones sake.
I seem to be able to avoid most situations by anticipating idiotic maneuvers from others, but on my last ride home from class, some guy ran a red light to get through the intersection and queue up on the onramp while I was turning right to access said onramp. He sped right past my left side, way too close for comfort. In that instance, I rolled on the throttle to catch up, and I kicked his car as I went past. Then I took off to avoid an opportunity for further escalation.

I do the exact same thing. I get people who will move into my lane just because I'm riding in the outside or inside third of the lane.
If I'm in heavy traffic, like bumper to bumper on the highway where people get really impatient, I'm constantly going from side to side in my lane to lay claim to my portion of the road.

Because people own guns with the purpose of self-defense or fun target practice? I hardly think so. Look, if somebody is looking to kill another person, they will find a way -- be it a gun, knife, hands, etc. So if you take away guns, the "heat of the moment" murders will not decrease; they will simply find another vehicle for murder. All other gun violence cases can be attributed to the people purchasing guns for the sole purpose of killing another person.
The only thing you can attribute to myself or the majority of legal gun owners is that they can be handled by the wrong person such as a child accidentally, which may end up in a death. Responsible people will keep ammo, clips, and the gun in separate places and locked up. Outside of that, why would we wonder why there are so many shootings? I know why there are so many shootings... because people are idiots and there are guns in the world. But if there weren't any guns, you'd simply change it to, "You carry a knife? And you guys wonder why there are stabbings all the time." It is cliche, but guns don't kill people; people kill people.
Even for non self-defense purposes, which is 90% of the reason I own guns, you'd be surprised how equivalent shooting a gun at the range and driving a motorcycle is. It is a strange mating of danger, excitement, tranquility, and peace.
And I'll end with this: I will be damned if I am not allowed to own a gun legally while it is even easier to acquire guns illegally by people you really don't want having guns. I hope I never have to use my guns in self-defense... and I probably wouldn't be able to recover mentally if I did; however, I would much rather live with the torment for the rest of my life than have some @$$hole take me away from my family and friends or take my family and friends away from me.

31 guns, though. If you could own 31 motorcycles, would you? I know I would. They all ride differently, made for different riding, etc. Guns are the same. If I could own 31 guns, I would as long as I could keep them safe :) Same with bikes for that matter.

There is a big difference between 31 bikes and 31 guns?
Guns ARE designed to KILL and that is a fact
Motorcycles are not, they are designed for transport.
Of course if I could strap a bullet to my bike and go that fast.......well then that would be fun. :icon_lol:
Yeah I don't get carrying a gun. Why? Only time I have a rifle is for target shooting or putting a sick cow down. Or kangaroo shooting.
Furthermore best way to avoid a conflict where you would need a gun for self defence is not put yourself in the situation in the first place!
I will never see the need to carry a gun unless it is required because of your occupation.

To each his own. MOST of mine are antique and/or collectable that I would never take anywhere. These represent a very good investment as whatever I have paid for them I could double my money. The rest are mainly for recreational/hunting purposes. I do have a couple for self-defense purposes but I NEVER would go about waving it at people that just want to start a fight or mouth off. I avoid just about any conflict , ecpecially drawing my weapon while riding. I completly see your point as that having so many firearms can seem excessive. However I probably have the least of anyone in my family as my step-father is a licensed dealer. It is a culture that can be very rewarding. I agree that guns and road rage is a horrible combination but I know given my experience that guy would've cracked my head in or I might have wrecked trying to evade him. If a gun is ever used in rage, be it road rage or domestic dispute, it is not being used in a justified manner. I felt threatened and thinking with a clear head, acted in a way that stopped the situation from escalating into something worse. I would always rather be jedged by twelve than carried by six.
And yes.... This got completly off topic. :)

That's crazy. Read the story in the link.
Makes me want a GoPro even more. As a woman even scarier. I was pulled over by an unmarked once but told the cop I will not take the key out of the ignition because I didn't know if he was a real cop. Luckily, a marked car shortly appeared. What i was pulled over for? Wanted to make sure my motorcycle wasn't stolen! My wallet disappeared in the ordeal and that story is well for another day.

So... back to writing about motorcycles on this motorcycle forum:
I hate idiots, so if an idiot cager tries to kill me, I move away and leave the idiocy for someone else to worry about. The last thing I need is to get myself riles up and off-task while riding in a sea of inattentive robots. SOMEone's got to pay attention, may as well be me.
Someone in a Lexus the other day forced me to ride between the fastlane and the median. Not of fan of that particular lane on the highway. To make matters worse, as I braked to get behind him, he braked right along with me, keeping me pinned there.
To the idiot cagers- a handwave and a smile is NOT an adequate apology. Give up your license and quit driving before you kill us all. Then Ill be happy.
I am taking one idiot cager to court here soon.
On my way driving to work this morning a civic jumps lanes right in front of me in stopped traffic with a red light 20 feet away, I jump on my brakes and manage not to hit his door. So I'm looking right at him (I'm facing his door) and he's got his window rolled down, looks at me and goes "Cool bike bro" and the light turns green and he drives off.
If I was in a truck, I'd go right over him just for the point of it. :icon_twisted:
